36 Proper Fan Belt?

I have a 1936 Ford Tudor with an alternator. The fan belt is in pretty bad shape and I can't seem to get any of the local parts stores to match it up right. I have tried a 59" and a 57" one is too...

I put the cutout back on and it still doesn't seem to be charging right. Something bad must happened when I adjusted the brush. So I will go from there.

I show a large discharge when I have the lights on instead of a slight charge like the directions show. It is new purchased from Macs.

With the old cutout it would show a good charge (10 to 15 amps) at fast idle without the lights on. So I think the generator should be ok.

I installed the generator and adjusted the 3rd brush, however no matter how far i advance the 3rd brush it shows 0 to barely charge at fast idle with lights turned off and still a large discharge...

Can't seem to turn it all the way off or on. It will go but not return, if I have it on or off. So it is always straight down. Rebuild kit fix it up?

I had planned on keeping pos to pos and neg to neg, just wanted to make sure that was okay with a pos ground system. That is what I meant by polarity not mattering.

I just asked the question wrong. I should have asked if polarity mattered when jumping the car and it looks like it doesn't.
