Perhaps if you try shorting out plug leads one at a time in turn may indicate which cylinder is noisy.Cheers

We had problems recently with very rough idle.Turned out there was a tiny hole corroded between one of the cast iron intake manifold throats and the exhaust heat riser. Quite hard to find but another...

Try shorting the spark on that cylinder while idling and hear if the noise changes.Cheers

I go with Graeme. Some Canadian engines had insert bearings.They were very thick shells and are now hard to find.The rods were big bore and I think would take floaters as compared to the smaller bore...

Have you got the little bracket between the top starter bolt and a sump bolt.Absence of same can cause the starter to get slightly out of line and jam. Cheers

Isn't there a system with both heads off where two pistons ,one going up and one going down are equidistant from the top of the block and another piston is exactly TDC.Can't remember the numbers but...

Quite a few of those came to New Zealand and some were converted to forest fire fighting appliances post war.Alot of the bodywork was removed and a pump was fitted driven by another V8...
