The thin gaskets are for setting the bearing preload. Do not use gasket sealer.

They work great on a flathead. Not sure how much flow it would decrease, but if you think how small the hole is when the thermoststat is open I personally don't think it would decrease it that much.

I believe your carbs are dripping fuel into the intake when engine is off. By opening the throttle you are introducing more air and it is leaning the mixture so it ignites quicker.
