I used a big screwdriver and a pipe wrench to pry/break the seal apart and lift it out. It worked, but I'm sure someone here will post a better and easier method.

You can clean whitewalls with NevrDull. It works quite well, but I'd wash them off with soapwater afterwards just to be sure.

I think the main reason for improved cooling would be that the air gets directed more onto the manifold and then pushed out through the bonnet vents?

Kinda depends on the car I think.
If it's a car where a high number of them are still on the road and spare parts are readily available I'd drive it without worrying too much. (like a Model A)...
