Re: Remove rear axle seal
I used a big screwdriver and a pipe wrench to pry/break the seal apart and lift it out. It worked, but I'm sure someone here will post a better and easier method.

Re: Tire Ooze Cleaner
You can clean whitewalls with NevrDull. It works quite well, but I'd wash them off with soapwater afterwards just to be sure.

Re: Engine Splash Pans
I think the main reason for improved cooling would be that the air gets directed more onto the manifold and then pushed out through the bonnet vents?

Re: Save it or drive it
Kinda depends on the car I think.
If it's a car where a high number of them are still on the road and spare parts are readily available I'd drive it without worrying too much. (like a Model A)...

Re: Brake Info Needed
I was able to hold the bolts with a normal ring spanner and use a ratchet spanner on the nuts.
Mind you, I also tried it the other way at first, but after sliding off before moving anything I...

Re: When is a "Model A" no longer a "Model A"
Difficult question, I'd guess that most people have their own definition about what is a "Model A". (applicable to just about ANY other car)
For me, a "Model A" is a "Model A" as long as it...

Re: Water in oil/engine
If water is in the oil, there's a high chance that oil is also in the water. Check your radiator.
To be sure you can just drain the oil, check it and then use it again if it is relatively new or...

Re: Can't separate axle shaft from carrier
I have axle shims, but when I use them there's no way I'll get the cotter pin inserted if I also use the axle shim between hub and nut. It seems that the drum is not rubbing on the backplate, so I'd...

Re: Can't separate axle shaft from carrier
Well, there *might* be a new problem. When assembling the rear drums on the new axles I get a scratching sound when turning the drum. It seems that the brake shoe rubs somewhere on the drum. Is that...

Re: Rear Wheel Horsepower & Torque
A Dyno measures the power and torque at the rear wheels. By measuring the drag of the entire drivetrain it then calculates the power and torque that the engine puts out.
Sure, there is a margin of...

Re: Rear Wheel Horsepower & Torque
I think that's a combination of big wheels and low weight. I can push my 90's compact car (weighing around 950 kg) just as well as the A.

*an eternity later*
So I finally got around to work on the A yesterday. We spent the entire day setting up the rear end with the 2nd carrier half that John sent me (again MASSIVE THANKS to...

Re: Low braking phenomena
I'd disconnect the front or rear axle brake linkage first. If nothing changes with one axle disconnected, you can assume that the disconnected axle is fine. If you can isolate it to one axle,...

Re: New Front Wheel Bearings
Their tolerances say max. 30 µm play between spindle and cone, I do not think that is enough to let the cone slide on the spindle when everything's assembled.

Re: New Front Wheel Bearings
The bearing centers itself to the other one the moment you tighten the nut. If the bearing is 5/100 mm off-center from the axle doesn't matter.
For that fact I assume it wouldn't even matter if the...

Please use Loctite like Werner said. Punchmarks may have been an official repair method by Ford, but that was in a time where better alternatives weren't available.
I just can't...

Re: Can't separate axle shaft from carrier
At least my old diff carrier is quite soft steel, or else I wouldn't have been able to machine it on my turning machine. If one used proper steel, lasercut the shims and surface-treated them they...

Thanks for the article. I can't imagine how much time ends you must have spent working on Model A's in your life so far. :P

Hello John,
yes, the good part and your part are identical, apart from the part number.
Honestly, I wouldn't have thought to check the part before sending it out either, because how probable...

Re: Can't separate axle shaft from carrier
Unfortunately not as my turning machine isn't big enough for that. (it's mainly for scale models, not for cars or machinery)
And having a ring machined probably isn't much cheaper than ordering a...
