Mike, It might be worthwhile to recheck the ring end gap, It's a pain to take it apart again but, may save you in the long run. It's too tight for a reason.

Just one more thought. Turning the star wheel clockwise moves fuel gauge needle towards Full.
Turning it CCW moves fuel gauge needle towards Empty.
Star wheel is for fine tuning the gauge NOT...

I'm no expert but make sure it's filled with the correct Fire Extinguisher Substance for a car fire. I have heard Halon is the best but, is not period correct. I guess you could carry 2.
