Most likely an alignment correction done at sometime during it's lifetime whether new or later.
Put it back the way it was and get an alignment to insure it's correct.

Same thing happens on my '51 MerOmatic.
Keeping any seal "wet" is not a solution.
The only thing that stops the leak (other than major overhaul) on the floor is to watch the oil level as it rises...

The large raised numbers are part of the sand casting process and I suspect that it is a defective casting,
It could probably have been just as well the number 9 that was left after the 5 was wiped...

I would put it anywhere in the hose that allows the heater hose to lay in its natural state (perpendicular to the radiator hose) and without any undo bends or kinks or interference with other...
