Phil, per the Ford service bulletins, turning the adjustment clockwise increases the damping and counterclockwise decreases the damping.

Probably not a good idea, the horn rod tube is very thin wall tubing and very likely to be deformed.

I agree with your thinking, 1937 had the water pumps located in the block and block off plates were used to install that engine in earlier models.

The speedo on the right is a 1937 standard due to the three digit trip odometer. I am guessing the other two are 1938 deluxe based on the four digit trip odometers.

The direction of thrust of the camshaft was changed on the 49-53 engines from the direction of the earlier model flatheads. So, either they sent you an early camshaft gear or your engine was built...
