Re: 1938 Temperature Gauge

I think it's 10. You should be good to go.

Re: Cast iron surface rust removal

It depends on the size. If they are small enough to immerse in a container of Evaporust or Rust-911 (which is cheaper but doesn't seem to work as well) without breaking the bank. that is the best way...

Re: hub caps

Yep, It was Olds "Fiestas" and Dodge "Lancers" where I lived. Nobody I knew ever ran "Sombreros".

Re: Electric fan over a belted fan

I had a '61 Monza coupe from new. I experienced the dreaded "swing axle tuck under and spin out" personally. I wiped out the right side of the car on a tree on the left side of the road. Luckily, I...

Re: Early Ford V-8 Museum Swap Meet

The A-C-D is no slouch either. I haven't been in the last dozen years, but make prejudices aside, I know which one I liked best.

Re: Electric Fan swap? Advice?

I think he has an 8BA he is planning on installing since there is no stock engine.

He may not be aware of the basic difference between the stock '40 fan setup vs. the 8BA.

Re: possible interest in another new restoration project? '40 convertible

Hair is over rated. Kojak and Yul Brynner did OK without it.

It's all worth it for the rest of us.

Re: Interest in new restoration project thread?

A always, I am very impressed with your work.

You have set a standard that most should aspire to.

Re: The Good, the bad, but no ugly

Also, you mentioned you have a fuel pump with a glass bowl. I have found that the gasket on these can leak causing the pump to suck air. Make sure that is not the case, and if necessary, replace the...

Re: Synthetic Oil?

I think that synthetic oil is the final exam for the class on installing rope seals.

Re: New 1940 Truck project: engine rebuild

First of all, you have to make sure you have a good crack-free block. The first thing you have to do is get the engine disassembled and have the block checked for cracks, wear, and general condition....

Re: Synthetic Oil?

After my racing days were done, I found I had 2 cases of Mobil-1 15-50 synthetic left over. I am running it in my '51 with no problems.

Re: 1953 Mercury Distributor - dual point / single point

I have spoken to the owner of the car in question, and the engine has aftermarket heads and a 4 BBL carburetor, which explains the presence of the after market dual point distributor. I will be...

Re: bad Babbitt Bearing or Valve Poor Quality Valve Job

That sounds much better. Do you have some more specific readings? Cold/hot idle and cold/hot at speed?

As an example of what can happen, my '51 had good oil pressure but an intermittent rattle...

Re: Coil readings what it it telling me

HMMMM, now if we could just figure out what coil he is using, we could check the OEM specs to see if they're what they should be.

Re: Coil readings what it it telling me

What ohms scale are you using for the secondary test? The 6.6 or 5.7 are lower than I usually see.

Re: Extra quart of oil with oil filter system?

This is the one thing I hate about flatheads. Since I don't want to leave even a pint of dirty oil in the engine when I change it, I always clean out the cannister. I get most of it out with a...

Re: 8BA oil canister bolts

Lets us know what you find out. I'd hate to see Offenhauser succumb to this. I bought a set of stainless headers off eBay for a ridiculous price. The headers were fine, but they came with metric...

Re: 1953 Mercury Distributor - dual point / single point

Whoa. That ain't right. The proper place for the vacuum line to the distributor is the port half way up the back of the carburetor. That port is plugged in your picture. Below the throttle plates is...

Re: 8BA oil canister bolts

Here's an odd thing. 8BA Edmunds heads have the provision for the three filter mounting bolts, but they are not in the same location as the stock heads. I had to do something similar to mount my...

Re: 1953 Mercury Distributor - dual point / single point

The problem is, we don't know if it's stock. The fact that it already had a dual point in it opens up the possibility that it may have had other updates. We really need a better idea of what he's...
