I would also check that gas cap vent isn't plugged. This would result in a slow flow of gas.

I used Kroil to loosen mine. Dripped it on the backside and between the handle and arm, then let it soak overnight. Next day repeated the procedure and tried to rotate back and forth....

I painted all sections separately, cleaned all inside hinge areas with a wire tube brush. I also made 3 new hinge rods out stainless steel. I also used a punch to get the rods started moving...

I once got a rebuilt engine back from a reputable rebuilder who either forgot to install all bearing shims or one fell out while installing them. Needless to say it was impossible to turn the engine...

I wouldn't reduce the lining thickness. The bending of the tabs might help as they might be expanding the bands. My linings are the same thickness as yours and fit perfect.

Never had any problems with hand crank starting any of my A's. Start with the spark lever fully RETARDED and ignition key in off position, if cold. Pull up on crank a few times and then turn ignition...
