Re: Do early/late distributors have different lengths?

Ah, that explains it. I thought my new cam was for 37-41, but it must not be.

Do early/late distributors have different lengths?

I had to install a new cam and cam gear in my 1937 21 stud, the later gear type that screws on instead of the earlier type that pressed on. Now the slot in the cam doesn’t reach the distributor. Do I...

Re: Running Hot When Not Moving

Is there a fan shroud that will fit a 1937 with the fan up on the generator? I did a quick search on the www, but didn't see much.

221 rear main needed, and a question about width

I thought about it for a quick minute, then took the main bearing to a local friend who is a pre1916 car machinist. He’s adding babbit to the thrust face tomorrow. Maybe a previous owner held the...

Re: 221 rear main needed, and a question about width

Hi Brian. The crank is 2.275” wide between the oil slinger and cheek of the bobweight. That slinger isn’t removable is it? Wishful thinking!

It sounds like my crank wore 0.025” for some reason. I...

Re: 221 rear main needed, and a question about width

Sounds like my bearing is standard length within a few thou. So it must be the crank that has worn to allow so much float?

221 rear main needed, and a question about width

The rear main bearing on my motor is OK diameter, but there is a lot of end float on the crankshaft: about 0.025" The bearing is 2.246" wide overall. Does that sound correct, or is the bearing worn...

Re: Perhaps Another "Dumb" Question

That's true in cold weather, but in hot weather the intake charge does well when cooled. I don't drive in cold weather.

Re: Perhaps Another "Dumb" Question

I’d like to keep the intake cool, but don’t need a raspy sound from the exhaust. Maybe I’ll try some pennies though and see how it goes.

Re: Best graphite thickness

Thanks Ron. I've used mine twice and wasn't sure if I should buy a new set next time.

Re: Best graphite thickness

How many times can the Best copper clad head gaskets be re-used?

Re: 21 stud motor oil leak rear of pan area

I’ll see if I can replace the rear main bearing while I’m down there. And add a drain tube if there isn’t one.

Re: 21 stud motor oil leak rear of pan area

Thanks Jack! That image helped me to understand. I can make up a similar gasket.

Re: 21 stud motor oil leak rear of pan area

Adam, I’m going to investigate if my motor has the same failed gasket. Where did you buy your replacement gasket?

Re: 21 stud motor rebuild, beginner questions

That is my understanding too Brian. (but I didn't know about the tube). The car sat for about 20 years after a rebuild. I bought it two years ago and have done 2500 miles, but with a constant spray...

Re: 21 stud motor rebuild, beginner questions

Thanks! That’s good info. I’m not sure what it take to pull out the whole crank. I guess all the rods, mains, plus timing gear. A real seal sounds like a good improvement though. I’ll locate...

Re: 21 stud motor rebuild, beginner questions

Thank you! That page on Red's site describes it well. And I might have been overfilling the oil. I did a four-hour freeway drive and the motor leaked about 1 quart every 75 miles. Ugh. It doesn't...

21 stud motor rebuild, beginner questions

My 1937 motor is leaking badly at the rear main. I think itÂ’s time for new piston rings. Cylinder #1 was low compression, leaking down past the rings and blowing oil out the breather and also into...

Shops in the San Francisco area?

Gotelli’s is temporarily closed, does anybody on the peninsula sell things like jets for Holley 94 carbs, etc?

Re: where to drill 21 stud intake for PCV?

thanks Talkwrench. The issue is that the recommended PCV requires a gigantic 1" diameter hole for its grommet and there is no place on a 21 stud intake big enough to drill a hole that large. But I...
