Re: 600w vs 90w

Read the Ford Dealer Service Bulletins for info on thinning the 600W oil with kerosene for winter.

There is not a "modern SAE 680" oil. The 680 is on the ISO scale. It is a different lab test from...

Re: how many tie rod turns equates to 1/16 inch toe in change ?

No, I meant 3/8 turn gives 1/16" change in toe-in, because that was the question you first asked.

And I'm not 100% sure of that because I did not calculate it myself. I took Ryan's answer and...

Re: Centering 1930 Model A Deluxe Coupe on towing trailer

I use a small scale that is manufactured specifically for measuring trailer tongue weight. It goes to 2,000 pounds.

https://www.sherline.com/product/sherline-trailer-tongue-weight-scale/

Works...

Re: how many tie rod turns equates to 1/16 inch toe in change ?

Wait, there's more...

When the tie rod turns, it changes the spacing between the rear portion of the wheels, and it is also changing the spacing at the front part of the wheels by the same amount....

Re: Paint color

All cars and trucks left the factory in 1928-1930 with black wheels. But it was a common practice "back in the day" for the dealer to paint the black wheels the same color as the pin stripe, at...

Re: Paint color

Instead of just words of color names in a table, you might want to get a copy of the Paint & Finish Guide. In addition to the tables, it has pages of paint chips in it that show you what each color...

Re: Toe-In Lesson Learned

What is the "spec" that you adjust the wheels to? Is it degrees? What is that number?

Re: Toe-In Lesson Learned

OK, so when you put it on the laser machine, what numbers came out?

Worth knowing.

Re: Toe-In Lesson Learned

Better question is how many degrees of toe-in, when measured on a modern machine, is equal to Ford's original spec of 1/16" +/-1/32"?

Then, if we take a Model A to a shop with modern machine, what...

Re: Crap - can't reply to a seller

It's not just you. I can't reply to a seller either. I think that feature has been turned off. Contact the seller directly instead of with a reply to the ad.

Re: Wandering

Mac-
Check your toe-in. Shoot for 1/16" +/-1/32" (Service Bulletins page 282).

Check also for king pin bushing wear. With tire/wheel off the ground (jack under axle) push in and out on the top...

Re: Garage lights

They are good for target practice. Bore some holes in a board or similar and they stand up very nicely in there.

:D

I have a big box of them also, many gone now.

Re: Checking the Horn Circcuit

The solid yellow wire that goes into the horn is not switched by the horn button at the top of the light switch rod. It is "hot" all the time.

The wire that has a tracer that connects to the horn...

Re: 12 volt?

David-
I have one car of each voltage. The main advantage of going to 12 volts used to be that you could put brighter bulbs in (especially in the headlights) and they draw half the amps at 12 volts...

Re: 1929 A headlights

The third wire is for parking lights inside the headlight reflector, at the top. A separate bulb hole in each reflector for a simple 3 cp bulb.

I hope this makes sense.

Re: Tighten the 21" rims straight

Werner, you straighten the runout of the wheel by selectively shrinking specific spokes to pull the rim in that direction. You shrink the spoke by heating it with a torch flame. It will ruin the...

Re: 6v coil restistance

Mike-
Your ohmmeter is lieing to you. It is not easy to differentiate down at the 1.5 ohm level. You have a new 1.5 ohm coil from NAPA.

Re: Model A Taxi

Good question. A coach builder would try to expand their business. This ad was from 1929, during the boom, before the crash.

Just because they ran this ad in the Ford Service magazine does not...

Re: reddish brown fan belt

Gary-
I don't think Brent was comparing it to the red stripe on original black/red radiator hoses. I think he was comparing it to the red radiator hoses, the ones that are all brownish red.

Re: reddish brown fan belt

Those belts are very cool, Brad.

Do you think the color has changed (faded) over all these year? So something like the darker red oxide or Brent's color is more original?

Re: TDC Finder

It's not. It's a generic tool for any engine.

Say you are working on a big V-8 from the 60's or 70's and you are going to install the distributor. No hand crank. No timing pin. You have to turn...

Re: Differential rebuild, lube bearings for preload adjustments?

Mike, when setting the bearing pre-load, remember the torque you are measuring is in inch-pounds, not foot-pounds. BIG difference.

An easy detail to misread.

I hope it goes well for you....
