Re: OT; trip to alaska

We visited Alaska three years ago and went through the Fountain Head Car Museum and CarlG is right. It is a must see museum if you are near Fairbanks.

Re: I tried corn head grease!

In my steering box I mix corn head with gear lube so it will just pour and it has been in steering box for three years and 20 thousand miles and it works great. John Deere formulated corn head grease...

Re: Who's running a Marvel/Schebler carb?

I am running a Marvel with the built in pump and so far I am very happy with it's performance. I also do not know how the pump functions except that when vacuum is applied to one spring it allows an...

Re: Rim Liners?

I used duct tape when I put new tires on last year and after about six thousand miles I haven't seen any problems. The reason I put the tape in was that after powder coating there was still some...

Re: Marvel Carb users

Be aware that the needle that Steiner sells does not fit all of the Marvel Model A carbs. I ordered one and it does not fit my carb. Marvel had two different thread sizes on their valve seats over...

Re: starter change

You do not have to remove the motor. You just have to remove the wires and three bolts and out it comes. You do need a extension on your socket to get at the back bolt but it is an easy job and...

Re: looking for recommendations for insurance for my model A

I live in Michigan and with the way you are planning to drive your car you would be very happy with Hagerty. I had a claim after I broke an axle last summer and hagerty paid for all of my body damage...

Re: u-joint questions

I have one more question. I looked at the Bob Drake site and it says that their u-joint has sealed bearings. Would that mean that I would not have to pack the u-joint housing with grease?

Re: u-joint questions

Thank you for your input. I looked on e-bay but a used one may not be any better than the two that I have now so I am going to order one from Bob Drake.

u-joint questions

I am looking for a new u-joint. I tried to order one from Snyders and they said that they were having trouble finding a quality product. Is anyone selling a good reproduction?

Re: Re-thinking shortened pitman arm

I shortened my pitman arm and converted a 1954 F11 steering box and it steers like power steering and I do not see any difference in steering radius. I think Ford went to a shorter arm shortly after...

Re: Maevel Carb users

Steiner is a tractor supply store and many tractors in the 40's and 50's used marvel carbs. The marvel parts that Steiner carries are for tractor carbs and they are a different carb completely. This...

Re: Transmision Tower tool

I did not get a picture of it, but it is not a valve tool. The fingers that capture the spring are in line with the knob that compresses the spring. The knob is about 4 inches in diameter and maybe...

I was at a consignment shop today and saw what looked to be a tool that would compress the spring on a model a transmission shift tower. It had an upper and lower set of fingers that would separate...

Re: Muffler heat shield??????

It also helps to put spacers between the sheet metal and your floor boards. A 5x7 sheet metal with spacers in back of the down pipe from the manifold is very effective.

Re: On the road repair to get home

Some things that happen you just can't help. Last week on our 2,500 mile tour we broke the axle on my car in Bayfield WI. Before the flatbed could pick us up we found a model a collector about 60...

I just switched from 19in. Firestone WW to Coker 16in. radial WW. I have only driven the new tires about seventy five miles but the difference is significant. The new tires track straight on grooved...

Re: 4 blade vs. 2 blade alum. fan

Last fall we had a club member loose a blade on a four blade fan on a tour and it ruined the side of his hood. I think the aluminum two blade fans are the best way to go.

Re: F150 tranny with overdrive

When they talk about cutting the cross member when you use the model a bell housing it sounds like a big deal. When I put mine in I had to grind an area about 1/4x1/2 in. and it is at the top of the...

Re: steering box oil

I mixed John Deere corn head grease and regular gear oil about 50/50 and it works very well. It stays fluid but it clings to the gears and doesn't leak.
