I would pull the box before driving, seems very improbable to me that the worm gear is loose on the shaft. If it is the car is not safe to drive IMO. The worm gear is press fit not keyed- I think.

Do all of the above and if that doesn't get it I would take the Zenith and clean as previously mentioned then install Snyders Gasket Set A9502-S - get two, cheap 1.50 each. Needle and seat A-9564-C...

I very seldom start out in first unless on a up hill grade. Plenty of torque to start in 2 nd. I may be wrong but I believe I am saving on wear and tear of pilot, throughout bearings and clutch. ...

Don't think so, looks like some slightly bent fins. A leak will flow all the way to the bottom when static. Blow off the area real good and see if wetness returns.

The frame is the negative "wire" to the engine. Over time the joints corrode resulting in poor contact. Add another ground wire from the battery to the block and keep the frame joints generously...
