Re: 8BA Flathead Ford Crankshaft Pulley Install

At least you can now sleep at night! Isn't it funny how we can start worrying about something like this . . . and it just plagues our mind until we go check it out and either see there is no problem...

Re: 91 birthday today

Happy Belated Birthday Ron! My Mom just turned 91 on the first . . . and like you, she is still a vibrant and wonderful person. Keep on moving . . . and get to 92!

Re: Rethreading Spark Plug holes in Aluminum Heads

I'd put some High-Temp LockTite around them when you insert them

Re: Rethreading Spark Plug holes in Aluminum Heads

I'd still use Timeserts if you can - they are a better solution than Helicoils - due to the short amount of thread and the fact that the Timesert is actually a completel little "sleeve".

Re: 8BA Flathead Ford Crankshaft Pulley Install

That big ole' bolt will take a lot more torque than 60 lbs - though the washer that goes with it may deflect. I would not worry about it in the least. If you're nervous, check it with a torque...

Re: Narrow V8 Rear Axle

Best solution: Banjo axle, updated with late 28 spline axles with a 5 x 5 1/2 bolt pattern, new axle bearing ends for using the Lincoln backing plates and brakes, modified differential and ring...

Re: NOS 8RT camshaft

You're going to have a great engine and you'll be surprised how much power it has down low . . . you'll soon be a dyed in the wool hot-rodder! LOL

Re: What spring rate should I set with stock springs and an 8CM camshaft

The Isky springs will work fine, though they will have a lot more spring pressure than you'll need. The more spring pressure you have, the more wear on the cam over time. You might consider...

Re: Magneto and belts

Yeah, when running a locked-out mag (all advance in), I will pump some fuel into the motor, leave the mag switch OFF, hit the starter and let it spin a couple times - then turn the mag on. This is...

Re: Magneto and belts

I have a few vintage Scintilla magnetos - they were the company long before Vertex. Every one of them has advance plates in the bottom.

The advance mechanism is 100% mechanical - it only...

Re: 6V vs 12V condenser

You really can't checkout if a condenser is working with an Ohm meter. You have to have a special device that charges it and checks the flyback.

A properly setup crab distributor is FAR easier to...

Re: Narrow V8 Rear Axle

Another thing to think about is mounting the rear - what springs, what cross-member, what control arms, torque-tube or open-drive, shocks, panhard bar, etc..

If you're going to run a transverse...

Re: Narrow V8 Rear Axle

If you already have a V8 rear, you might find that it isn't a huge expense to do the above mods. Also, they used to have housing ends that would take the original Ford or Lincoln brakes - and later...

Re: Narrow V8 Rear Axle

What width are you trying to achieve - backing plate mounting face to backing plate mounting face?

I don't know of anybody who can supply narrowed tapered axles (and I wouldn't invest in them...

Re: Magneto and belts

I don't see how you're going to be able to use the inner belt unless you make some sort of custom "idler" that is driven by the outer belt from the crank pulley (which will also drive the outer...

Re: Break-in gone wrong!

I would not buy the Speedway pump - have seen issues with the castings.

Re: V8 Rear Axle Width

One thing to note - if it doesn't have rear hubs on it, then it is highly possible that the bearing surfaces for the rear hubs are rusted. While they can be machined and sleeved, this adds cost to...

Re: Adjustable Lifters

Kind of depends on the resulting base-circle of the cam and the length of the valves. If you run longer valves (like SBC length) - then the extra length makes up for the smaller base circle. Of...

Re: Tiny ends heavy axles

Can't tell much . . . but it doesn't look like a 32 from the angle pic?

Re: Tiny ends heavy axles

I'm with the crowd that doesn't really like the "stretched taffy" look of heavily dropped 33-34 axles. Just not my style.

I'll take a mid-dropped 32 axle any day over the 33 - 34s. Like...

Re: Valve angle (s)

Not exactly sure what you mean? The hardened valve "seats", the valve faces or both?

Three angle valve jobs are not specific to flatheads or any other engine. The reason you need multiple...

Re: Break-in gone wrong!

Keep in mind that the little gear on the end of the cam might be slipping. You can probably tell by "holding the bigger gear" with something and have a friend manually turn the engine over. You'll...
