Re: Timing an 8ba

Does "total" advance include a vacuum advance, or just initial and mechanical?

Re: 36 pickup bell support over universal left out

What is that? I've not been into a pre-'37 driveline but have been into several post-'37s and can't visualize that part. What have I missed?

Re: 8ba valve train help needed

5 years ago I built an engine. I bought most of my parts from Reds Headers. I used Chevy SS undercut valves because I was using a small base cam and was told the extra length was needed to prevent...

Re: timing

Fast idle sounds like a vacuum leak. Are distributor brake lines secure?

Re: Bench test Vacuum on fuel pump

I've never been able to work a fuel pump with my finger. It takes some effort to pump it. Find a way to hold the pump steady and put some real pressure on the arm.

Re: Electric steering

A 50 amp fuse doesn't mean the current usage is 50 amps. There is usually a large margin between actual and fused. Sometimes the fuse size is determined by the wire capacity, not the load on the wire.

Re: Fuel pump just as a pass thru

Vic Piano did the conversion and detailed it in his thread entitled "What I did on my lunch hour". The problem is that only the most recent 20 pages of that thread are archived and available. He did...

Re: Radiator for '41 Coupe

Never heard of cold case radiators, but looked them up. They say their radiators have two rows of 1 1/4" tubes. I had a Griffin with the same tubes in my '40 with a 302. I had a thermostat controlled...

Re: Ignition Problem or Carb Problem

You need about 3-3.5 ohms resistance on a points distributor running 12V. Your coil should get hot running a 1.5 ohm coil with no external resistor on 12V. It should run more than 3-4 minutes,...

Re: Posting pics?

Nice car! I like Folkstone Grey on the '40. Maroon complements it well.

I put lots of miles on this one over 20 years.

Re: engine shut down enrouote

Resistor? Ignition switch? Bad connection? No power at the coil through the normal route?
Turn the ignition on, start at the coil and work back to the power source until you find voltage.

Re: 3.54 vs 3.25

The 3.25 will lower your RPMs at 55mph to 2145. I think it will take it to make a significant difference. Then you might have difficulty getting rolling. That can be helped with pick-up transmission...

Re: Choke/throttle rods set up

Re: Autolite 216 plugs

As stated above, .025 is standard. A larger gap requires more voltage to jump the gap. The discharge will seek the easiest path to ground and may jump through plug wire insulation, cracks in...

Re: 8BA Running Temperatures

My 8CM has 180 degree stats. It struggles to get to 160 in cool weather. I tell myself it is because the water pumps' bypass is sending cool water straight to the heads.

Re: Adding a Coolant Overflow Tank

If the level in the top tank is below the input to the radiator from the engine, there will be aeration from the splash. If the bubbles make it to the water pumps, I don't know. If they do, the pumps...

Re: Battery Comment - Not What You Think!

As others have noted above, it doesn't need to be really tight. I also hold the cable up close to the post in the opposite direction of the wrench force to support the post.

Re: Trouble shoot 1950 8Ba initial start up Help
