Check the primary resistance on the coil. Mallory is notorious for providing the wrong coil. With a 12v system, you'll want a total of about 3.5 ohms resistance.

I second idle screw adjustment. How far are they turned out? Should be about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 turns.

Does the piston have 4 rings? If they do, I never use the 4th ring. You'd be surprised how much extra drag they cause.

Your observations are spot on. At idle, the engine receives a less dense mixture and also there is some exhaust dilution due to cam overlap. All this means the engine needs more spark advance to...

No myth involved. Ported spark was developed to reduce exhaust emissions. I worked on engine development in the auto industry in the 60's and 70's. Ported spark was a way to reduce hydrocarbons...

Ordered my book last night even though I don't have a 40. I have a 39 DeLuxe and there is a book for 38 - 39 models from the V-8 Club. Well worth having.

I have 3 test stands. Keep one used engine up and running to test rebuilt carbs and distributors. Always nice to know you have good units when starting a new engine.
