If you can make a wooden one you can likely get it cast in aluminum.
I know that sounds like a wild thing but I get pieces cast often in aluminum and bronze.
Harder to get short runs than it used...

I remember years ago Al Lapore had a gauge for the fit on those. If they were too loose, he cull and wouldn’t install new balls on them. I can see where a bit of weld and test fitting would cure that

Best not to drill. It could leave part of the screw protruding on the back side and not let the hinge come forward to remove. Only solution then is drill bigger!...

Another issue is that the A tranny in not synchronized. The heavy dope helps the shifting process. I’ve not tried thinner oil but would think leaking would also be an issue.

It’s the Janka hardness scale. But it doesn’t tell all about suitablility.
I’ve found that ash and hard maple work best. Oak can cause acid reaction with metals when water is present.

I use hard maple for most pieces. I get it from Peach State Lumber in Kennesaw which is fairly near you .
