Make sure you have the proper studs for cast drums, they have a longer shoulder.

Looking at the Standards it looks like the arm should be 6 3/4" long
and the blade 8 1/4".

If you have the other nuts off try pulling on the wheel while turning the stuck nut. The stud should have a nub on it and if you can get it in the slot on the hub you may be able to get it off.

Long shot on your miss fire but the distributor bodies have been know
to short between cylinder internally.

but there was never any mention if that problem was...

Is this possible? I had the points stick on a regulator one time and
all it did was smoke the generator.

If you are using new production point the contacts will probably not line up.
Bratton's sells a points block that will correct this....

anything particularly rare about a Bud cab wide bed.

The first thing I see is you have the wrong carburetor. Here are some pictures. The first picture show how the linkage should be but the return spring is wrong. The second picture shows the correct...
