Just as a follow up, Paul's chrome is willing to repair/re-plate but was very upfront about the cost involved. I respect that, so the hunt continues for a better candidate. I'll work on this one...

Thanks fellas. I’m sending detailed pics to Paul’s chrome regarding cost to repair and salvage. It’s getting very hard to find straight ones and Drake stopped making them a few years ago.

I recently replaced the head gasket on my Brigs OHV mower, the MMO did a nice job de-carbonizing the piston and head while I had it apart. If I was a You Tuber, I would have posted a terrible video.

Weak acids are great for paint/patina safe rust removal. Citric acid (the orange cleaner mentioned above), vinegar, and oxalic acid are good, just rinse well after and protect your eyes/skin.
