Re: Can I use new cast brake drums with old shoes?

If the shoes are in good shape, linings are thick, pin holes aren't wallowed out, etc. I would have them arced to the cast drums and use them. Are they woven or molded linings?

Re: Question ????

Always carry one. Never needed one for the A yet. Only car fire I've had was a small electrical fire in my Jeep. Had an extinguisher handy for that one too. Cleaning up the dry chemical was a pain...

Re: King pin felt washer orientation

I installed mine the way rotorwrench described and I thought I had them backwards. Maybe not?

I did have to reuse the old cups though, the new ones were too thick. I think Les Andrews book...

Re: 6 volt group 1 battery

Considering almost every manufacturer converted to 12v in the mid 50s I think it's impressive that you can still walk into some parts stores and pick up a 6v battery at all.

Re: Taillight bulbs

I hemmed and hawed about adding turn signals but now that I have good headlights and I'm driving at night more often the hand signals just wouldn't cut it. I picked up a set of restored Yell-O-Lite...

Re: Battery Group ???

From Bob's chart the original battery was 9-3/8" long, the group 2 dimension is 10-3/8. Sounds like it would be too long to me. FWIW, O'reilly's lists them for sale on their website.

Re: Question on power to the light / horn switch

You might have the same harness as me. I have one black wire that feeds the lights and horn off the generator. It must be spliced into the horn and light switch feed wires in the main loom. Can't...

Re: The Battery Game

If I kept track of what I spend on mine I'd probably have a stroke and then sell the car :D

I put a new battery in mine this year. Cheapest place around was Napa. Right around $90.

Re: Rusty Coolant

Buy yourself some Thermocure, it's made by Evaporust and meant for exactly your situation. Follow the instructions and you'll be amazed at how well it works. If it's really bad it might take two...

Re: Bad generator?

If it doesn’t motor check to see if you have a brush hanging up. Might be as simple as that.

Re: Rear Axle Taper - What It Does

Brake squeal is usually caused by not tapering the ends of the brake linings.

Sorry Bob, I also agree that the key is only there to keep things aligned/stationary while assembling.

Re: low & no spark on #3 cyl

Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure my original distributor body started arcing from the #3 contact. Interesting observation.

Re: The Terry Burtz 5 main bearing engine blocks are back on track.

Wow, I'm impressed that the pump even made the pressure that it did with an open 3/8" port back to tank. I look forward to seeing the oil pressure numbers with that passage blocked off.

Re: throw-out bearing

That's surprising. When I pulled my transmission out it had an Aetna throw out bearing. Never gave any trouble. It probably was 30+ years old though, might have been better built then.

Re: Preston “ALL VEHICLES” Antifreeze

Wow, I’m amazed they don’t stock it. I would call prestone tech support to be sure. It’s not worth taking the gamble, especially on a new radiator.

Re: Preston “ALL VEHICLES” Antifreeze

If you have a Walmart near you they should have the standard old green coolant. The universal stuff might be fine but some of the “long life” flavors will eat the solder in the old radiators these...

Re: Idling high

Most likely a carb issue, yes.

My engine idled a little high and I couldn't get it lower just like you. I took the carb off and saw that the throttle plate was tweaked ever so slightly in the...

Re: light rod stuck in shaft

I think the size of the repro rods has been addressed. I just got one from Snyders and measured it against the old original and they were within .001 of each other. Original was .373, new was .374....

Re: Does Optima battery charge different

To my knowledge the Optima charges like any other battery when it's in a car. I know some newer battery chargers do have an AGM mode but I'm also not sure how that's different from normal.

If...

Re: Carb leak

I couldn’t see the picture until now. Maybe it’s an illusion but the fuel level looks too high? What level are you setting it at?

Mess, absolutely. Big loss, no. Doesn’t take a lot coming out to make a big mess. It’s like glitter :D

Here you go, follow that and see if you can tighten it up. Same procedure as the bulletins with nice illustrations.

Re: Front Fenders Hit the Shocks?

Pictures would definitely help. You're using the stock Houdaille shocks?
