Re: No. 7 Cyl never gives evidence of a power stroke on '46 Flathead

I usually do my own rebuilds but am trapped with running my business these days ... no time for fun stuff like rebuilds. Regarding selecting a rebuild place, I made an assumption that anyone working...

Re: No. 7 Cyl never gives evidence of a power stroke on '46 Flathead

Well .... first, thanks for all the input from you Ford persons. I have to say that all that troubleshooting was done under the assumption that the engine rebuilder assigned someone experienced with...

Re: No. 7 Cyl never gives evidence of a power stroke on '46 Flathead

Flatjack ... I agree. The problem is that the rebuilder insists that I not do the work, as he is responsible, but to let another shop remove the manifold etc. They will not be able to remove the...

Re: No. 7 Cyl never gives evidence of a power stroke on '46 Flathead

In any case, this forum, and all the inputs from everyone, caused me to perform the tests I did perform ... and caused me to think through the suggestions. I am fortunate to have found the forum...

Re: No. 7 Cyl never gives evidence of a power stroke on '46 Flathead

BTW, the shop that did the rebuild is going to pay for a mechanic to remove the intake manifold and chk the valve setting. He will also check for a foreign object preventing the valve from closing...

Re: No. 7 Cyl never gives evidence of a power stroke on '46 Flathead

A friend suggested that the No. 7 valve might be sticking partially open, and suggested that I inject some Marvel Mystery Oil into it. I will try it. However, the following three points allows me...

Re: No. 7 Cyl never gives evidence of a power stroke on '46 Flathead

I agree 40 D, that it should provide a power stroke with the 125 lbs. This morning, while driving to work in other auto, I remembered something I noticed yesterday. Upon holding a piece of paper...

Re: No. 7 Cyl never gives evidence of a power stroke on '46 Flathead

After work, I got some firm data. As I said earlier, the plugs, wires, and spark verified as good. I warmed the engine and checked pressures at cranking speed with throttle open (I forgot to do...

Re: No. 7 Cyl never gives evidence of a power stroke on '46 Flathead

I just fast-read the input. Looks good, will read more slowly when I get to Ford later today. I had to work yesterday, and am this morning. I "did" purchase a leak-down test unit yesterday....

Re: No. 7 Cyl never gives evidence of a power stroke on '46 Flathead

I sense some ambiguous data offered by me. Am working today, but tomorrow I shall do some "solid" testing, including a "leak down test on No. 7". BTW, the 45 lbs referred to was an experiment at...

Re: No. 7 Cyl never gives evidence of a power stroke on '46 Flathead

Andy ... that's a possibility. Tony ... you are correct. I've received some ambiguous info about the cranking speed pressures on the No. 7, as compared to the others. The battery is on charge...

Re: No. 7 Cyl never gives evidence of a power stroke on '46 Flathead

Actually I forgot to convey this in my post. I've a dash mounted gauge. At idle, there is a continuous and distinct flick to the left .. from about 16 inches to 15 inches ... or occasionally to...

No. 7 Cyl never gives evidence of a power stroke on '46 Flathead

I'm a decent troubleshooter but this confounds me. A just rebuilt 239 cu. in. runs on 7 cylinders, but No. 7 seems to have never fired in spite of changing the plug, the wire from the crab...
