Re: Who Can Diagnose THIS Total Mystery? Win A Prize?

I’m happy to report that it appears the mystery has finally been solved! And so what was it?

After weeks of trying virtually everything, we were just never able to identify the real problem and...

Re: Who Can Diagnose THIS Total Mystery? Win A Prize?

Tudor, thanks. I have long suspected something in that distributor but even after completely rebuilding mine with all new parts (including a new lower plate) AND buying an entirely new one with all...

Re: Who Can Diagnose THIS Total Mystery? Win A Prize?

Funny, but I've thought of that already. Problem is, how would I select who to bring down...and what if, in the end, he had no better luck resolving than all my buddies here who have tried and...

Re: Who Can Diagnose THIS Total Mystery? Win A Prize?

Yes, Gary, someone else alerted me to this issue on your other thread. I checked and found my Zenith did NOT have the micro filter and the screen filter SEEMED okay. I replaced it anyway, just...

Re: Who Can Diagnose THIS Total Mystery? Win A Prize?

Checked all plugs in the last couple of weeks. They looked good but we replaced them anyway, just in case. That didn't help, either.

Re: Who Can Diagnose THIS Total Mystery? Win A Prize?

I know "the guru" has certain equipment I do not have have. Not sure if a dyno is available to him but will check. I think a thorough look at electrical is first on his list. Thanks for the...

Re: Who Can Diagnose THIS Total Mystery? Win A Prize?

Hi Tom,

Yes, proper filter in the shutoff as well as screen at bottom of tank. Have also drained tank and flushed tank and found no crap in the tank.

Originally had a copper fuel line under...

Re: Who Can Diagnose THIS Total Mystery? Win A Prize?

Mea culpa! My bad--and my apologies--for not keeping up with more-frequent progress reports on this on-going mystery. Here's the latest:

I can't believe they're still speaking to me but with...

Re: Who Can Diagnose THIS Total Mystery? Win A Prize?

FOLLOW-UP/UPDATE:

Mid-range drive showed no recurrence of this problem but will need to go farther to be sure.

Also, before the latest test drive a "tractor-like" chugging sound along with...

Re: Who Can Diagnose THIS Total Mystery? Win A Prize?

Sorry for the brief delay. Something "more important" than my Model A problem came up. I know, how can that be, you ask?

Back to take a long test drive tomorrow. I haven't forgotten my promise...

Re: Who Can Diagnose THIS Total Mystery? Win A Prize?

Follow-up #3 as promised:

I had high hopes for this idea but, alas, when I let it spin 30 times or so while holding the fuel line, I felt no change in the warmth of the line whatsoever. So...

Re: Who Can Diagnose THIS Total Mystery? Win A Prize?

H.L., I understand the concept but if the fuel line is serving as a ground and thus heating up, why doesn't the problem occur during a sustained cruise situation instead of just after a long cruise...

With known-working distributor now replacing mine that is suspect, I took it out on a drive today, a 72-mile trip down the Florida coastline to St. Augustine and back. ...

First, H.L., I really appreciated your detailed test idea for proper ground. Today a club pal removed his distributor (known to be working well), we removed mine and replaced it with his (re-setting...

Re: Who Can Diagnose THIS Total Mystery? Win A Prize?

I should have been more precise. I did actually install only the small SCREEN and not that fiber filter thing I've seen some guys use and fills up much of the glass bowl.

Re: Who Can Diagnose THIS Total Mystery? Win A Prize?

Yes, at first thinking it was debris in the fuel line (we saw a very few flakes in the glass bowl at the firewall), we drained the tank entirely. Nothing much came out of the tank when we drained at...

Re: Who Can Diagnose THIS Total Mystery? Win A Prize?

Tom, it started this right after I got it last summer and we all assumed it might be vapor lock or some kind of heat-related issue...but now, even in 60-70 degree temps it STILL does it.

And the...

Re: Who Can Diagnose THIS Total Mystery? Win A Prize?

It never really dies altogether...it just sputters and backfires and loses power. Pulling out the choke floods the carburetor to the extent that it just gives it slightly more power momentarily...
