Flathead front end noise

Looking for ideas here.


Rebuilt 59a, 3 bolt Mallory crab distributor. There is a clicking from the front end and seems to be from the timing cover / dissy. I've set the lash on the Johnsons...

Thanks for the advice, I've noticed some scrape marks with the tangs on the retaining clips might be touching the block so I'll move them then refit. I've tried with the fan belt off and noise still...

Thanks for replying. I can’t get rid of a clack from the front end, set the lash, changed dizzy spacer, compression good at 150 so am now clutching at straws.

Yes, its a spacer between the cam (new Schneider cam) and the 3 bolt dizzy. Ordered new spacer arrives tomorrow so will try that.



Mart - yes, i checked that and cap is ok plus tried with...

24 stud with Mallory electronic crab distributor, clacking from front end. Set the lash on the lifters and all good. Still clack when engine revs then settles down. The distributor drive (offset)...

Need some advice please, 32 coupe, 284 flathead, warmed over and 3.54 final drive. Not sure to go for 36% or 26% over, anyone got experience?

Technical; Mallory crab

Got a Mallory crab on a 284 French block, ran fine then died, no spark at plugs. Changed the coil, all wires ok. Think it might be the distributor, do these have any internal parts that can wear...

Well that all sounds like a plan, hopefully it won't get dropped of the ship in the Atlantic.......Will post photos when doing the work.

Thanks for the comments, based in Scotland its a long drive to most shows so 7 hours at 3000rpm isnt good - a lot of oil! Even with 3.25 gears would stil be too high, neighbour next door has a 35...

I've ordered one (for a 32) and hoping will keep the engine to around 2200rpm at 70, it doesn't like running at 3000rpm for 7 hours on the motor(free)way.

Yes as it happens Douglas (trad v8) has a couple of Laycock over drives and we were speaking with Bryan Daly about machining up the closed drive to fit this. Some photos as you asked would...
