Re: ‘40 2 door sedan

I can't believe anyone would want to put a 700 lb Olds in a Ford. If a OHV engine,I would opt of a 292 Yblock (about the same weight as a 85 hp) or a rear sump 302, with a closed drive T5 trans.

Re: Camber wrong on ‘35

That's a straight slope and not a radii crown, right?

2° would be 5" in a 12 ft wide road bed.

Re: What Size Truck Tires for 1946 1.5 ton???

I did a little looking around I found 9.00 20's they are hard to find and expensive, about $330 - 425 each. 8.25 are a little cheaper, I found them @ $277, delivered to my zip 97502....

Re: Camber wrong on ‘35

As a point of interest and the reason that they were built with positive camber is, that the old highways had a fairly large crown, to keep water from standing and promote draining of the roadway.

Re: 4bbl carb on flathead?

The thing about a Holley and the vacuum secondary's, is that the secondary's will not open, until there is enough air flow through the primary's to warrant it.

It is much like progressive linkage...

Re: what was your first car and how much did you pay

My best friend was 3 years older than me. He got married young (16) and in '59, when I was 15, we made a deal for his '48 Merc, coupe, tuck & roll seats, 3/16 bored, stock engine. The price was my...

Re: Various thread pitch’s needed

I guess I should add to my above post, that I'm a machinist and the specs I give are from the original Ford drawings.

Re: Various thread pitch’s needed

Regarding the stud holes for the head, they are tapped to .0025 under the nominal pitch diameter and the drilled hole is to be between .349 and .353.

The proper tap will be 7/16x14 H-5, where a...

Re: Piston to Head clearance

Yes, .040 is a "standard" but, you can get away with as little as .035.

Since you bolted the head down, you can't tell what the clearance is so, I'll suggest tw ways.

1. Put the head gasket on...

Re: 1937-1938, 21 stud engine bored to .125

Here is what you have to work with on a 21 stud, using Fords engineering drawings:

1. The distance from the center of the bore, to the center of the bottom stud, is 1.937.
2. With a 3.188 bore,...

Re: Safety of old tires

I'm on the reckless, endangering mine and others life side but, I've had a lot of experience with NOS tires, w/o any failures.

BUT, I'm not encouraging anyone doing as I do!!!

98% of tire...

Re: Arc grinding brake shoes

Yes, use 40 grit, 220 will clog, really fast.

As a mechanic, in the 60's, I also did a lot of brake jobs and the shoe arcing machines had a wheel that was way courser that 40 grit. It looked...

I'll also give Fastenal the thumbs up. I sold a Zephyr trans, almost 3 yrs ago and the quote, was less than 1/2 what Fedex was but, the pandemic was full on and Fastenal had shut down many of their...

Re: Throttle body fuel injection?

Ford used one on the early '80's, 302 LTD's, that could be adapted to a FH. It has the Holley 2 bbl bolt flange on it.

Re: What Ford 6 cyl. used these spark plugs?

When I was a mechanic, in the '60's, the shop bought their plugs 10 to a box. We'd take out 4, for a six and 2, ford a 8 cylinder.

It never made since to me, either but, that's the way it was. I...

Re: '36 221 - rebuildable??

That's about what a high mileage engine looked like, in the early '60's, when I became a mechanic. The worst one I had to clean, was 215 Chev. I was a good thing that I was young (18) and wanted to...

Re: '36 221 - rebuildable??

The reason for the late heads, is that on it's last rebuild, they put domed piston in.

The valves are just stuck open. You can probably tap most of them back down.

As for main bearings, you'll...
