Re: Leak that healed itself...

Thank you, Thank you Mike V. Florida. I posted a couple of years ago that I was running my old engine near to the low mark on the dipstick with no leaks. Above this level it was making a real mess! I...

Re: rotor problem

Yesterday the motor started to misfire a bit - not too bad. We went up a 1 in 3 hill in second gear without too much trouble. On inspection the rivet on the rotor had come lose and the brass contact...

Re: Oil level

Steve -We have a strong motoring following here in the UK. Loads of events going on - racing, trials, hill climbs, sprints, navigation and shows. The A has only recently been recognised here for just...

Re: Oil level

Thanks Steve_Mack. I have heard it said that an engine runs best of all at the end of it's life. I take this as a warning, but it is running far too well to justify an expensive rebuild now. I've...

Re: Oil level

Thanks Mike. As I suspected - the F means Full and L means Low (not empty). It does not mean Essential and Unacceptable. Any point in between is OK. So if I maintain my engine oil closer, but above L...

Re: Oil level

Oil is very cheap - but it does make a mess. From this thread I am happy that the oil level that my motor has 'chosen' is just above the LOW mark but still within the recommended range - that's good...

Re: Oil level

I understand what you're saying but the reality is a Model A is very different to a modern car. Bearing sizes, seals, speed, stroke length, efficiency, compression ratio, oil pressure,...

Re: Oil level

Thank you for your comments Runnerbun - and in principle I totally agree.
The car is a South African car now in the UK. The engine was 'rebuilt' in the 1990's by persons unknown and has done little...

Re: Oil level

I totally agree Bluesunoco. And now my oil level has stabilised near LOW on the stick I don't need one any more either
Could a high oil level be the fundamental problem leading to the folk law...

Re: Oil level

Firstly - from the photos in the other thread, it seems I have an original dipstick which is a good start.
Second - my oil level has settled at 7 3/8" from the top which is just above the Low mark....

Re: Oil level

Really useful Roadrunner. Non of our problems are new I guess - I just couldn't find the earlier thread with the search function - is it me?
I will check my dipstick against the measurements and...

Question Oil level

I have been regularly topping up the oil level to the dipstick mark and then leaving a trail of oil on the road on sharp bends. I have the oil catcher fitted which overflows. The car has been using...

Re: Tires

I've just completely worn out a pair of Lucas 21" tires in just 3000 miles on the rear. Can't believe it. Front are fine and show little wear.

Re: Backfire!!!!

Well I tried most of the suggestions and the problem is fixed. Thanks for all your ideas.
Embarrassingly the problem was driver error. I had it in my mind that the mixture screw was opened for cold...

Re: What Brakes?

I'm not sure where you get them from, although it might tell you elsewhere in this thread.

What is the opinion on how they would work with the FHT floater pivots? I would have thought that the...

Re: What Brakes?

Thanks Keith.
It's all in good condition and I now have new cast iron drums.
Could it be used in conjunction with the FHT floating top wedge?
Which bits will I have to buy to use the FHT kit?

What Brakes?

I ordered my new Flathead Ted Floater kit from the States. I'm in the UK. The car just has the original tin brake drums so I planned to fit cast iron drums and the floaters at the same time. So I was...

Re: Route 66

Thanks for the feedback so far. Did I say, well chested blondes (female) would get priority but there's plenty of time for that ;). This is just a germ of an idea but I would certainly love to do it...

Lightbulb Route 66

My Dad always said "If you don't ask then you don't get" - so here goes -

One of my lifetime ambitions is to drive Route 66 in an old car. I have a '29 Phaeton but it is with me in the UK - a...

Re: Model A speedometer question

Update - I fitted a standard speedo gearbox today and hey - it works!! Great relief. Haven't checked the accuracy yet but the gauge looks steady.

Re: Model A Taxi Cab

You're exactly right Ronn. I want something clear for me to read but not for the passengers to see. A thin magnetic clock of about 3" would be perfect with no permanent fixing. I was very...
