Re: 1959 Mercury 312 engine color

Thank you. I'm finding it difficult to nail down the color combo used for my 1959 312. The valve covers have blue under red and the original air cleaner is long gone. I don't see any paint on the...

https://motor-car.net/ford-engines/item/13818-ford-y-block-engine

Re: 1959 Mercury 312 engine color

Hi Mercman, that's a good pic, but it looks like someone painted the block Ford Blue, which IIRC Ford didn't start using until later production in the 60's.

Re: 1959 Mercury 312 engine color

Thanks Mercman. I noticed when I was researching that Mercury seemed to use different color combinations depending on the CI displacement of the motor. I see a lot of 1959 Mercury Montereys with...

Re: 1959 Mercury 312 engine color

That's what I was thinking. On the 1959 312, I thought the block was some shade of green, with red valve covers and air breather. I'm curious if anyone has the Krylo/rattle can color code for the...

1959 Mercury 312 engine color

I've confused myself looking online & searching threads for the 'correct' color to paint the block/valve covers/air cleaner on my 1959 Mercury Menterey with a 312. Is it green block with blue valve...

Re: 54 Mercury Fuel pump question

Both of these fuel pumps work with my 1959 312.

This is a "regular" single action fuel pump. When installed, it is orientated so the glass bowl is at the bottom.

I'm not sure what year car you have, but my 1959 has a 312 Y-block, is 12v and has a resistor.

Re: Gen to Alt Conversion - Easy?

Cool story. So I was planning on goin with a '1965/1966' Mustang alternator. It is like 55 amps, and uses a standard external regulator. I'm not sure about going to a GM-style 1-wire setup. This...

Re: Gen to Alt Conversion - Easy?

Does the factory generator require specific maintenance? Like manually oiling a bearing?

Re: Gen to Alt Conversion - Easy?

That's a good point. In my 59, the previous owner had installed an air conditioning unit. It's not working yet, but the compressor is hooked up under the hood and the hang on under the dash...

Re: Gen to Alt Conversion - Easy?

The reason I'm thinking about changing to alternator is because they are off-the-shelf available (plus I have a bunch of good used ones just laying around), and because on low RPM the gen seems to...

Seems the conversion in the link below is for an early Galaxy, but I would expect the details to be very similar to any early Ford. The article also apparenty...

Re: Gen to Alt Conversion - Easy?

Hi Gene, I agree. I'm not sure about the "quirks" of these old cars when going from 12V DC to 12V AC. Seems like it could be straight forward...but I'm often not suprised when things are not as...

Re: 66 mustang speedometer cable placement

Yep, Lanny is right. the cars eqiuiped with 4-speed transmissions have the speedo pass through on the left side of the transmission tunnnel. Here's a pic of a derelict 1966 A code fastback GT that...

Re: Gen to Alt Conversion - Easy?

Yes, that's right....it is a 12v negative ground already. I'm wondering if I'll neeed to swap voltage regulators when I move from DC to AC?

Here's the type of DC VR that currently is working with...

Re: Gen to Alt Conversion - Easy?

Hi, I was thinking of using an alternator from a 1965/1966 Mustang (289ci/302ci). It is a "standard" 3-wire hookup with an external voltage regulator. I think the ones I have laying around are all...

I think I want to convert the 312 in my 1959 Merc to an alternator setup. Other than mounting and aligning the alt to replace the gen, are there any other concerns I need to be aware of? I'm...
