Re: Differential Pinion Gear Bearing Preload

About how much change. Is it small enough, that if I keep the load at the bottom side if the tolerance, the change won't raise it to outside the upper end of the tolerance? I might have to make a C...

Re: Differential Pinion Gear Bearing Preload

I made a tool from and old damaged drive shaft. I cut it down and welded a nut on the end. It is about 50mm, 2", longer than the pinion and still has the key fitted. I can loosely slide it into the...

axle housing bent

How easy is it to straighten/re-align the bell of the axle housing. Whilst mounting one of my housings in my lathe, as I rotated the housing to check for rotation clearance, I noticed a.070"...

Crown wheel clearance

I have slowly been rebuilding the diff for my 29 roadster. Did a clearance check between the crown wheel and the housing. The was some light rubbing, so it was a few hours with marking out dye and a...

Way back when I was an electroplater, we would recommend Mr. Sheen furniture polish for chrome.

Re: Turn Signals

If you change to LED from incandescent bulbs, you'll need either a load resistor or an electronic flasher can. I run the latter with my LED indicators, a Narva 68249.

Re: Value of an Un-Restored Model A Engine

I recently sold a complete engine for $50, and told the buyer that if there's a crack, bring it back and I'll get another one out for you. It comes down to supply and demand. I have about twenty five...

Re: Pre Osha

Same in Australia, we call it OH&S, and the authority is worksafe. Different states have their own authority, but it only applies to commercial businesses. If I'm on my own roof doing my own thing,...

Re: 1929 Standard Roadster

Also, the seals provide a bit of resistance, assuming you have them, and they're in good condition.

Re: List of Reproduction "A" Parts That Don't Work

Vintique radiator caps.
Any repro radiator surround.
For us Australians, Pete Jackson side valance panels, radiator valance panels, bonnet shelves, running boards.

Re: List of Reproduction "A" Parts That Don't Work

Dad has been restoring A's since the sixties. If you want bad repro, then you need to look at what was available from Argentina in the seventies. We still have some of the parts stored away for...

Re: Tudor seat pivot pin

My Tudor is far from concourse, so I just used a bolt and nyloc. The shank of the bolt is long enough to go through both sides of the floor mount, and I have cut the length of the threads so I don't...

Re: Repairing worn hub axle races

Just as well that I don't have new hubs. I could see the sleeves being expanded after fitting the same way as a bush shrinks in slightly when pressed in. Although honing a bush back to size after...

Re: Repairing worn hub axle races

The sleeves I got from Henry's(Snyders), suggest using loctite when fitting the sleeve to the housing, as well as .0015" interference. It's a learning curve for me, my first one. Found out the...

Re: Repairing worn hub axle races

What a coincidence, I've just set a housing up in my lathe to do the same thing.

Re: Float-A-Motor Mount on 28 roadster with fixed front mount

With a roadster body, I don't think chassis sag would be an issue as they are the lightest body. If you use the rear support that comes with the FAM's that bolts onto the rear of the gearbox and...

Re: Prices going through the roof?

I don't think 20K USD for the Coupe is over the top. That would be around 30K AUD, which is about right from what I've seen here in Oz. Remember it's 2024, not 1974.

Re: It's a crime

I think the same about modern cars, "why would anyone want to restore a VS Commodore or 1993 Magna etc". But, people do, and we have them in one of the car clubs I'm a member of. So I just let them...

Re: Front and Rear Brakes, Drums

I was thinking the same, some of the standard brake parts are not there on the front brakes.
