Check the resistance of the primary winding, it needs to be ~3 ohms for a 12 volt system.

It sounds like your timing and gears are spot on, so the problem is either electrical or carburation. Have you tried replacing the condensor?

The amperage should be stamped on the metal part of the fuse, one end or the other.

Was the fuse black inside (shown that it had blown from overload)? Or was it just NFG (not found good)? Some of the cheaper (read Chinese) fuses have a tendency to fail internally for no obvious...

Remove the side valve cover and the oil pan so you can clean out any bits of the failed gear that have migrated around the engine and can block oil passages.

FWIW, I've found that square tubing works well when working w/long objects in a press. It take a heck of a lot more force to deform the square tubing compared to pipe.

Getting the worm off the shaft is fairly easy, getting the new worm on is the difficult part.
