I don't know about your ammeter part of this, but I do know that if you leave your ignition on and the points happen to be in the wrong position, you can cause the points to pit or actually fuse...

All my old Ford 8n tractors run 160 degree thermostats, They go into the upper radiator hose just above the water pump/head outlet. Doesn't anyone use these? and if not, why not? Look at them...

As mentioned, the Detran Battery Tender (6V) works great. I use them on all my 6 Volt tractors.....never had a problem with over-charging, but I did have one that quit working. Search them on line....

Full retard; about 3-4 clicks on gas lever, GAV at 1/2, full choke till it fires. I have great vacuum reading (19) which seems to preclude manifold leak, and seems the throttle set at 3 clicks...
