Re: Coolant flowing from radiator cap at speed

I had exactly the same problem. It turned out to be a cracked head. I also had tell-tale white smoke on start up from coolant leaking into a cylinder and burning.

Re: Got a car now what?

Mike, I am new to the hobby - I bought my first A ('31 AA, actually) last spring and rebuilt the engine. It is a driver, not a show car. I plan to license it for parades and August-only driving...

Re: 31 AA - Gas Valve Rebuild Kit?

John, that is how mine is, too. However, I don't know if it indicates original or repro. I'm guessing that external appearance is indeterminate and only the 'guts' provide the indication.

Re: 31 AA - Gas Valve Rebuild Kit?

Thanks Tom and Bill - maybe I could tighten the packing nut a bit more.

I'm not familiar with the pencil filter. There is not one present now. However, the (Zenith) carb inlet has a pencil-like...

Re: 31 AA - Gas Valve Rebuild Kit?

I drained the tank in order to disassemble the valve. A descent amount of crud in the gas. The tank had been cleaned and sealed by the prior owner but I guess that doesn't mean it's perfect.

Re: Late 1931 indented firewall gas valve

John, I am in the same leaky boat.

There is a rebuild kit available which uses a graphite packing ring and some lube. However, it only works with an original, late '31 valve. I will be checking...

Re: 31 AA - Gas Valve Rebuild Kit?

I was able to get a reply from Snyder's: I need to verify if my current valve is original or repro. The kit works with original.

31 AA - Gas Valve Rebuild Kit?

Hi everyone.

Now that Al is tucked away for the winter months, I have a few little things to finish up. The shut-off valve, located on the indented firewall, leaks out the end of the tube. Not...

Re: 31 AA Radiator Cap Blows Water at High RPM

So, yesterday, here in southern Michigan, it was 70 degrees. Today, it's 34 and snowing! Guess which day I had available to finish reassembly? Yup, today.

Anyway, Al is back together and fired...

Re: 31 AA Radiator Cap Blows Water at High RPM

@100IH: It's the latter part of your final sentence: The seat was not ground concentric with the centerline of the valve guide. The valve is perfect.

That being said, it's ok now. It just took...

Re: 31 AA Radiator Cap Blows Water at High RPM

@John: I had the radiator cleaned out at our local, highly-reputed radiator shop before installation. And, yup, it's the bigger rad. Thanks for the input.

Re: 31 AA Radiator Cap Blows Water at High RPM

Got the piston back in and had some time soooo...I had a lap dance with the valve again. And, yes, I feel dirty

Took another hour of fire starting but it seats now as well as all the...

31 AA - Repairing a Cracked Head?

Hi gang.

In another thread, we all learned of how my #3 cylinder became a swimming pool. A shot of the crack is below.

While I have a replacement head I'll be using, does anyone think this one...

Re: 31 AA Radiator Cap Blows Water at High RPM

:mad::mad::mad:

I lapped enough to burn a national forest. Barely tightened the gap. The valve is uniformly ground but the seat is not. I will contact the machine shop that performed the work...

Re: 31 AA Radiator Cap Blows Water at High RPM

@Chris: Is it odd that I was able to remove the pump, with fan attached, without damaging the radiator? It really came off quite easily. The radiator, on the other hand, was a BEAR to remove and...

Re: 31 AA Radiator Cap Blows Water at High RPM

@SeaSlugs - Thanks for the advice. Fortunately, I installed adjustable tappets this summer for that very reason. I don't have that kind of patience. Recalling a bit more, I remember my...

Re: 31 AA Radiator Cap Blows Water at High RPM

Well, I figured it all out. Yup, all of it. Pretty sure. Won't know for certain till reassembly.

1. Battle fleet glycol smoke screen. Crack in the head. Not sure why I didn't see it when I...

Re: 31 AA Radiator Cap Blows Water at High RPM

Hi Bill. Thanks for the advice.

I had the radiator, which was already in very good condition, professionally cleaned out over the summer. The block and head were also clean as a whistle.

Re: 31 AA Radiator Cap Blows Water at High RPM

Seems like I'm going in the wrong direction.:(

On 8Oct, I loaded up the bed with a few hay bale seats and drove my extended family (14 of us) to the nearby (1 mile away) cider mill and back. That...

Re: 29 Roadster Pup - Possible Light Switch Positions?

Thanks Tom.

I'll have to trace the wiring and see why I get no front parking lights in any position.

29 Roadster Pup - Possible Light Switch Positions?

Hi everyone.

Last weekend, we added a 2nd Model A to the family; a 29 roadster pickup. It will be a driver for my wife while I chug around sparingly in the AA.

The AA light switch on the...

Re: 31 AA - Won't Start When Hot

@Tom: I was wondering if this could be used for that purpose. Glad you confirmed. Thank you.

@Dave: I fully rebuilt the carb over the summer - clean as a whistle. Before I began rebuilding the...

Re: 31 AA - Won't Start When Hot

Thanks Bob. It seems to me to be a way of allowing dirt inside.

Any thoughts on question #1 regarding the air filter porting?

If at first you don't suck seed...

I think I resolved the issue. So, last night I reset the points but only drove it today. No good. Still would not start hot.

Next, I replaced the points...
