Re: Final Drive ratio, will a 3.25/1 be too steep ??

Some of the S10 5-speeds have a 4.06 1st gear. If you do have a 4.06 first gear and a 3.25 rear, you will have a 13.195 to 1 low gear compared to a stock ratio of about 10.66 to one. If you go with a...

Re: '50 gear ratio

The "standard" rear gear ratio for overdrive in the V8 was 4.11. I don't remember seeing any other offerings for hilly, flat, station wagon, police, etc, although there could have been some. In the...

Re: Transmission Countershaft and Bearings Question

Is the ID of the cluster gear machined to the bearing OD all the way through, or just in the area the bearing is supposed to run on?

Re: Brake pedal travels too far

I agree with cadillac. It takes all the fluid from the first pump to push the shoes against the drum because the mis-adjustment requires the cylinder to extend more. The second pump restores the...

Re: Under hood Insulation

My '55 originally had insulation under the hood over the exhaust manifolds. The person who painted the car before I got it didn't replace it. It has been several years and there is no damage to the...

New '40 Deluxe grill quality

I have a friend building a '40 convertible who doesn't do internet forums. He is needing a grill and obviously wants the best bang for the buck. In the offerings from Speedway, Carpenter, Vintique,...

Re: T5 5 speed to 1935 Ford Pickup speedometer

If the speedometer head in the truck hasn't been observed working correctly previously, I would't rule out a worn/defective speedometer. I've seen them jump wildly from zero to 60 mph. Registering...

Re: 1937 Halogen headlight conversion

My '38 came to me with the Drake halogen conversion (12V). Although not as bright as LED, they match the prism in the lenses and work fine for my limited night driving.

Re: Ignition primary for 12v conversion

I understand your concern. Many here use the Bosch coil with success. There was a period that Amazon had them for about $25. I have heard complaints on the Pertronix coils. I think some of those...

Re: Borg Warner Overdrive in a ‘31 Model A

If the overdrive unit was allowed to run low on lubricant, the ring/sun gears will lock up with a bang. This will result in no free-wheeling and no overdrive. It sounds like a tear-down and...

Re: Aluminum radiator 1950 Ford Custom

When selecting an aluminum radiator, focus on tube size. The cooling fin contact on the side of the tube transfers the heat from the water. The larger the tube, the more fin contact. A number of...

Re: 8BA, 12v coil question

Assuming you have a 12V NEGATIVE grounded battery installation, the negative side of the coil should go to the distributor. The sensor wire from the tach should also be on the side going to the...

Re: 55 Ford Wagon Timing Question:

Initial timing has little to do with running hot except with prolonged idle. The distributor advances (or should) as engine speed increases. About 35 degrees should be close to max advance. A timing...

Re: '50 3 speed with overdrive question

The overdrive relay will click when the governor closes the relay and again when the relay disengages. I think these will be the only normal clicks you should hear.

Re: Use standard 12v relay for overdrive?

Although I've not used one, I have read that others have used the relay you refer to successfully. I think the original fuse for the relay on a Ford was 30 amps. I would use a 40 amp aftermarket...

Re: Dixson Tach Dwell tester

If it works like mine, red on the distributor side of the coil and black to ground. If it is 6V positive ground system, you might have to reverse them. I've not used one on a positive ground system.
