I have been away from flatheads for years and do not remember if the French blocks were stronger or they were just available NOS blocks.

Tod,
I'm not very familiar with the early blocks but the later ones always seemed to crack between the water jacket opening and the threaded stud/bolt hole. It has been quite a while but it seems...
