Thinking I need a new starter solenoid?

I have a 1949 Mercury converted to 12v with stock 6v starter. I turn the key on hit the button and it cranks for one turn & then it spins. Turn key off and it cranks for as long as I push the button....

Yeah,thank you. The wires were tight, it’s a new part but when I was checking it out I noticed one terminal the wire connects to was wiggling so I figured it was worth a shot at $30 to get a new one....

Got it fixed yesterday. It was a loose terminal on the OD kick down switch.

I don’t think I have a lockout switch because I don’t know what that is.

Everything is fairly new. Just put a new 12v solenoid in have checked all the wiring. I don’t have a extra ground strap. One thing that was happening is 2nd gear OD wouldn’t work & 3rd gear would....

Does the seal go on the solenoid or inside the case ? I will probably be able to tell when I pull it out. I guess I need to put power to the solenoid to activate the shaft to pull the old one out and...
