My 1938 81A engine filter had been fitted with a 15cfm paper filter element when I got it. Plugs were always fouled and poor mpg. I took the filter element out and replaced with a free flowing gauze...

No you are not wrong, I replaced one on my '37 recently and used my oxy-acetylene torch to heat the tabs so they didn't break when I bent them up, and heated them again when I bent them back down....

The identification on mine below the big A is the word FORD in the traditional style...

37 Sedan Fender Welting Colour

I have painted my '37 Sedan its original Washington Blue that it wore when it rolled out of the factory in 1937.
Was the fender welting originally blue or black?
