Re: Checking radiator for overheating problem with 1956 Thunderbird

As far as I know, only Mummert (ford-y-block-com) has an aluminum thermostat housing; it matches his aluminum intake manifold. Any Tbird supplier will have an original-type, cast-iron thermostat...

Re: Which coolant recovery tank for 1956 Thunderbird

I have one of those kits. It's easy to install, cheap, and, in my opinion, cheaply made. Make sure the hose is secure, or you'll find a puddle of coolant on the ground. I would be willing to pay more...

Re: Widest tire you can run on front of a '55?

My OEM 15 x 5 wheels are sitting on 215/70r tires, but 215 is a bit wide for 5-inch wheels. 205/75R15 tires are commonplace on 15 x 5 wheels. 70-series tires look right, but I would not go with a...

Re: What a 57 T Bird Dist, Carb and intake worth

I posted a 57 Tbird distributor for sale on several forums, including this one, for $700, but no takers. I've seen them listed on ebay for much more, but they're not moving. Considering you want the...

Re: Checking radiator for overheating problem with 1956 Thunderbird

The cheap, infrared temperature readers aren't particularly accurate; my HF gun can be off by several degrees.

Re: Checking radiator for overheating problem with 1956 Thunderbird

Here is a quote from Ted Eaton: "I have not had any issues with the extension tube interfering with the thermostat. But I typically just use auto store bought thermostats. I have heard of...

Re: 57 Ford Fairlane master cylinder non power

The stock, non power-assist master cylinder has a 1-inch bore. When I converted to Wilwood Dynalite 4-piston front discs, both Wilwood and Dave (Drop 'em, Stop 'em) recommended 15/16ths (still...

Re: 57 Ford Fairlane master cylinder non power

How could Dennis read replies without the internet? This site would not exist without it.

Re: 57 Ford Fairlane master cylinder non power

I just looked up a 57 Fairlane master cylinder on RockAuto; it looks just like my 55 MC (manual brakes) and even has the same size 1-inch piston. Maybe your brake-pedal hanger is not aligned with all...

Re: 57 Ford Fairlane master cylinder non power

If you are replacing the OEM single-circuit, single-reservoir master cylinder, it should not be unlike the one that came on my 55 Tbird. There are four mounting tabs, and I think Ford continued to...

Re: transmission service prep

Sorry, I can't speak for Gene. However, if he can't help, hopefully he can recommend someone who can. If you're near Salem, try stopping by his shop.

Re: cam question

Good point, Miker. He should be ok with valve lift below .500, but he needs to verify.

Re: cam question

It's cam duration, not lift, that's primarily responsible for moving torque and horsepower up the rpm range. When discussing big/small cams, it's a reference to duration, not lift. If the replacement...

Re: What type of rear axle does 1956 Thunderbird have?

The spring perches on 55-57 Tbirds are not add-on; they are welded to the axle housing and came that way when they rolled off the assembly line. My 55 Tbird has been in the family for 50 years. No...

Re: What type of rear axle does 1956 Thunderbird have?

The Tbird spring perches are different. They're similar to lowering blocks, in that they were designed to lower the back of the car.

Re: What type of rear axle does 1956 Thunderbird have?

37 Coupe, the rear end in your 53 F-100 can't be exactly the same as 55-57 Thunderbird. Although 55 and 56 came with a Dana 44, 57 was the first year for the Ford 9-inch. Unlike the Dana 44, which...

Re: Body to frame bushings

Unless polyurethane bushings contain graphite, they might squeak; use silicone grease.

Re: Reassembly Questions regarding firewall

The aftermarket firewall cover instructions say that the hole is for the windshield wiper vacuum hose. There were perforations around the area of the hole, which had to be punched/cut out. I have...

Re: Reassembly Questions regarding firewall

Patrick, does your car have windshield washers? Sometime during its life, all of my components had been removed, but the nozzles were still in place on the cowl, below the windshield. After looking...

Re: Head light switch '54

I don't know about 54, but 55, 56, and 57 Tbird ignition switches are the same for both 6v and 12v.

Re: Head light switch '54

By the way, even with the headlight-switch button being depressed, the knob can be stubborn when removing it from the switch. It helps to twist while pulling. I found this to be the case, even with...

Re: Head light switch '54

When I converted my 55 Tbird to 12v, I replaced the original (defective) headlight switch with a 12v switch. The turn-signal flasher, cigar lighter, and clock (now quartz) also 12v. However, you...

Re: Help Id Jahns pistons

deuce 5, thank you for doing your homework before selling the pistons. I frequently find parts on ebay, the sellers of which have no idea what they have.
