Iíve seen some pictures of engine ďstandsĒ made from wood (probably pieces of 2x6ís) on this site a while back. Would wood work for you?

You might want to open the other headlight (but not remove the clips) and use it for a pattern to install the clips on the first headlight.

A while back, I had a similar problem with my 1965 Mustang. The battery cables appeared tight, but the car would not start. An hour earlier, I had just driven the car about 80 miles on a warm day....

By any chance, do you have a tachometer connected to the coil? My tachometer went bad and made my car hard to start. Try disconnecting the tachometer, if you have one.
