Re: Horn

On a closed car, remove the bolts holding the steering column to the frame and to the gas tank and tilt the steering column down.

If the wire to the horn button is grounded, as described above,...

Re: Not A, But Interesting

Interesting video. Well, they did not make 5 million of them.

A while back there was a hulk of a Bugatti car on Bring a Trailer. Too much work and money for me to bring it back. It was bid...

Re: Seized motor/potentially overheated

Do you have the hand crank? Have you tried turning the engine over with the hand crank? What happens if someone pushes in the clutch while you try turning the engine over with the hand crank? That...

Re: Exhaust manifold intake bolts broke

Bob, that is a good idea. In this case, after installing the plug, he could drill and tap the plug using the intake manifold as a drill guide. I would use Loctite or JB Weld to lock the plug in the...

Re: Knocking. Valves?

Could be valves. Could be something else. Try slowing down the engine by retarding the spark. If the noise goes away then the ignition is too far advanced. Or you may be able to better tell where...

Re: Sticking valves?

How many miles on the engine? It may be time for new rings, lapping the valves, and taking up the bearings. Back in the day, this was usually done at around 25,000 miles. It can be done in the car...

Re: Seized motor/potentially overheated

Take the head off or look in the cylinders with a bore scope to see if there is scuffing on the walls. If the pistons get really hot they can expand and scuff. If that does not solve the issue,...

Re: Exhaust manifold intake bolts broke

A new or used (in good shape) exhaust manifold is what I would chose. If you want to repair that manifold, it will need to be welded up and re drilled and re tapped. I don't think a Helicoil is...

Re: radiator splashing

I use an extra thick O ring on my radiator cap to seal it and keep the coolant from splashing out. The water pump impeller can push extra coolant when you rev the motor to down shift. Or, as Canton...

Re: Hole inside front block

I remember reading that the hole was broken through with a hammer after the block was cast and that is the reason it is so rough.

Re: Head stud to block

The Helicoil will work just fine. It will provide more pull out strength than the original threaded hole. Only one thing to watch out for and that is the accuracy of drilling the hole for the tap...

Re: 30 Model A engine rebuild

Rusty, What are you planning to do with your car? If you are planning to use it a lot and drive across the country and keep it for decades, then you should consider the Burtz block. If you are...

Re: new guy, old car

One other piece of advice: Add the fuse that mounts next to the starter switch. That will protect you from an electrical fire.

Re: Henry and Edsel

Henry has been blamed for Edsel's early death. But I think Edsel's lifestyle had something to do with it.

Re: Does it matter - Tie Rod Direction

What was wrong with the old ends? Can't the pads just be replaced?

Unless you are having the car judged, what is wrong with the grease fittings being in front, or what is wrong with turning the...

Re: new guy, old car

Ole Thirty, You are doing all the right stuff and it sounds like you have the mechanical skill to work on this car. As you say, it is nice and easy to work on.

Change all the fluids. Use a...

Re: Jazz Age '28 Sport Coupe on Hemmings Auction

Side tanks are available that fit under the splash aprons, but they cannot be used with the stock mechanical brake system because the brake rods get in the way.

Re: Interested Dash information

Wick, those are the wrong kind of matches. One would have to use the "strike anywhere" kind that had two colors on the tips. I am not sure if they are available anymore.

Regarding leaking...

The Old Motor

There is a neat photo of a Model A pickup in the latest edition of The Old Motor, see https://theoldmotor.com/?p=157396. I would publish the photo here but I am not sure of the copyright issues.

Re: The absolute 'MINIMUM' cylinder wall thickness....

Brent, You are not going to get an exact answer to your question. I agree with Updraught that liners should be installed. For one thing, they are harder than the original cast iron and will last...

Re: Batteries completely discharging

Installing a battery cutoff switch is a good idea for two reasons: It will eliminate any drain on the battery when the car sits. It is also a safety item in case there is an electrical fire.

Re: Jazz Age '28 Sport Coupe on Hemmings Auction

The car is immaculate. The best place for it is in a climate controlled museum. I would be afraid to drive it around the block.
