From memory, the gasket surface was a standard size but there was different lengths.

How thick are the body block pads? I'd be tempted to cut them from the sidewalls of an old tire ifn the thickness was correct or close enough.

The reason for that is the tops tend to shrink when left down and are hard to reattach when they are put back up.
Perhaps "modern" tops made w/synthetic material don't shrink like the original...

If you buy modern (worn drive) hose clamps be sure to get ones that are all stainless steel. Some are made w/SS band and plated steel on the drive part, they will rust and give problems.

Try .032" for a while, then try .035" for a while to compare. Every engine/components are different.
You may also try .030".

I agree. Also, make sure the washers are hardened ones. I bought "hardened" washers from one of the reputable vendors and they were soft, and deformed when tightening the axle nut. I ended up going...
