Re: Looking for Mail Truck History

Doug: I am one of the loyal few at PostalAs. Most are on FordBarn as well. I’m trying everywhere I can to find the back history of my Mail Truck. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Looking for Mail Truck History

I have a replica 1931 Mail Truck built by Walt Pazda in Silver Creek, NY. He evidently had a business or large hobby building Model Ts and As. When he passed there was a huge estate auction with 20+...

Re: Something is not right!

Built a Toe-In Tool, set the correct toe in and safetied all the plugs. I found several issues while investigating the steering. First indication was when I noticed the right front tire had worn...

Re: Model A Ford Mail Truck

The annual Chesapeake City Woodie gathering is quite a show in a beautiful town and setting along the Canal. I missed it this year but plan to make it next time, especially if one of our rare Mail...

Re: Model A Ford Mail Truck

Yes, that is almost universal for the Model A Mail truck. All were governed to 25 mph max, so I expect they spent their running lives lugging around town on short runs. I wonder at the engine and...

Re: Model A Ford Mail Truck

The wooden Mail truck bodies were mated to the Model A chassis at the Regional Post Office Garages in major US cities which were allocated specific numbers by the Postmaster General. Initially these...

Re: Model A Ford Mail Truck

There are two listed in Maryland. One in Pasadena, one in Frederick. Probably one of these that you have seen recently. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Something is not right!

I have solved the toe in issue short term by cutting an inch from one of my spare tie rods. The short one will fix the toe in for now. It’s too cold to roll around on the shop floor now to...

Re: Model A Ford Mail Truck

Thanks go to “Wick” for adding the colorful history of his #10072 original Mail Truck. There are around 40-50 survivors of the 1400 York-Hoover and Mifflinburg bodied Model A Mail Trucks. Small...

Re: Something is not right!

Short term solution: my machinist is removing 1” from the straight rod steering arm. That will allow me to set proper toe in at one sixteenth inch. I’ll keep the long tapered tie rod for when I do a...

Re: Something is not right!

I do have a pair of crusty arms. Will compare angles and lengths. Thanks. I did have books and manuals. They went away when I sold my 1929 Woodie and I thought I was over Model As. Then along came...

Re: Using Ford Barn as an distraction

Your son served his country. All of us who did so made our contract with our country to live and possibly die defending her either at home or in foreign fields. Not something we talked about but...

Re: Something is not right!

My options are two. Cut and retread the right side of one tie rod so I have adjustability, running an incorrect tie rod but with correct toe in. Or I can learn how to identify and locate the correct...

Re: Something is not right!

Very interesting about the shorter tie rod. No mention in any manuals I have about different steering arms and shorter tie rods. Learning, always learning. I did not build this Mail Truck which...

Something is not right!

1931 Mail Truck, has issue with too much toe-in. I have two 43.5 inch tie rods to use, with either screwed completely up to the end of the threads, I still have 1.25 inches of toe in instead of one...

Re: 1928 Oil Pan

Thanks for the great advice. Think I’ll stick with the later pan. Using quality oil and changing annually or 500 miles.

1928 Oil Pan

I have a 1930 engine in my 1931 Mail Truck with its standard oil pan. I gave an excellent 1928 oil pan with its large flange drain hole. Wondering if using the 28 pan would be advantageous regarding...

Re: Black fender paint

Looking great. I’m thinking Nason is the solution for those reasons. Their sanding sealer will seal the primer already applied. Thanks.

Re: Black fender paint

The Post Office spec was for a right spare well and sliding doors for driver safety. There was only one seat. The slider was a believed a safer way to exit into the road than with a swinging door....

Black fender paint

Time to correct the front fenders on my ‘31 Mail Truck. When I got her, she had a welled left instead of the standard. And a standard right instead of the well for the spare. I found two good...

Re: Preferred Speed

My Mail Truck and I made about 450 miles in 2.5 days. We averaged 40 mph through some mountainous backroads. The truck is a ‘31, I’m a ‘48. Had a blast. Seating was a bit cramped but tolerable. I...
