Re: Batteries completely discharging
Thanks everyone. I went to the car this morning and it was fine - started right up. I did the cutout test outlined in the blue book and it read "OL" for both tests, which according to the book is...

Batteries completely discharging
I'm wondering if this is a case of me getting 2 bad Optima batteries, or my car is killing them. It's a 31 deluxe roadster, stock, 6V positive ground.
In both cases, the car started and ran just...

Re: 1931 Stalls when any load is put on battery
I will second what Tom Endy said above. I did exactly what he mentioned in my 31 roadster and still can't believe the issues it mitigated. Be sure to tighten the connections too - that may have...

Re: Frustrating start problem
**UPDATE #2** - Well, it finally cooled off enough for me to play with the roadster. I got new battery cables including the copper positive version like the original. I removed both of the old...

Re: New noise - is this ok?
** UPDATE ** - Hi all - well, I took the clamp off and it was full of soot and the back bolt had quite a ring around it, this despite using some muffler seal recommended in many places. So, I tried...

Re: New noise - is this ok?
Thanks for the tips everyone. I didn't think the sound was correct. We did use the muffler sealant but apparently not well enough. I like the foil trick - may use that instead. Off to the garage...

Re: New noise - is this ok?
We inspected both the manifold and the muffler and saw no cracks.
It has been tightened three times - both the muffler/manifold connection and the gasket nuts
Muffler cement was used in the...

New noise - is this ok?
Hi all - after we replaced the manifold-to-engine gasket on my stock 31 Fordor, the car now has a very throaty sound to it, both idling and under load. Generally, the car runs fine, but this sound...

Re: Frustrating start problem
**UPDATE** - It seems as though the starter is the issue. I took it to cars and coffee this morning and it ran fine going there. Went to leave, and dead. I put it in gear and moved it only a bit...

Re: Frustrating start problem
@Gene - thanks. Will try that too.
@Patrick - Thanks also. Will be playing with it this weekend if it's not too hot.
@Jerry - thanks. I'll need it!

Re: Frustrating start problem
@ Marshall - Your explanations make the most sense I've heard! I did have grounding issues in the very beginning, and the fact that my jump pack works immediately every time further reinforces it. ...

Re: Frustrating start problem
I have - it's fine. This is the second battery I've had also, since the first battery turned out to be bad for another reason. The problem happened with it too.

Frustrating start problem
My 31 roadster is becoming more and more unreliable - so much so that I'm hesitant to take it out. Here's the issue: Sometimes it simply won't start on its own - by that I mean when I touch the...

Re: Dies when slowing down
Thanks all - after this next storm I'll go and see if I can find the leak. I will definitely post a solution if/when I find it! Thanks again

Dies when slowing down
Ugh! I'm stumped. The car runs and idles fine, except when i remove my foot from the throttle to slow down, or when just slowing down, it sputters and dies more than half the time. It will start...

Re: Still dying at idle sometimes
Wow - even more and better advice. It turns out that the float was too low. I guess I'm still trying to figure out how something like that can happen just all of a sudden - the car went miles and...

Cap Jet Thread removal - Zenith carb
Hi all - I went to remove the cap jet from a Zenith carb and it broke, leaving the threaded portion in the body. Any ideas of how to get it out, given that I do not have a shop in my back yard? Or,...

Still dying at idle sometimes
Good afternoon. My 1931 Fordor is having trouble with idle. Oftentimes (but not always) it will die on deceleration or at stop - it sounds like the idle is too slow. If I increase the idle, it...

Re: Outside mirrors
Well, this stupid system is not letting me upload pics - it just keeps telling me to register and log in, so sorry - no pic. But trust me - the arm is much longer than the regular mirror arm

Re: Outside mirrors
I apologize for the not-up-close pic, but it's the only one I have right now (my cars don't live with me). Take a look at the rearview mirror - the arm is longer and the mirror is not centered on...

Re: OL Reading on a 28 truck
Thanks all - it's only been since about February that it hasn't started, and I was assured that it ran fine then, so I'm thinking it's still something small. I'm going back over there in a few days....

OL Reading on a 28 truck
Hi all - I'm trying to get a friend's 1928 truck going and having no luck. It would crank and not start. Then, we heard a pop and it won't even crank now. When I put the voltmeter on the battery...
