Re: Happy PI day!

Cool and very clever, Fred. Yes, today is Pi Day.

The first 10 unrounded digits of Pi in perfect order — an occurrence that won’t happen again until 100 years from now in 2115.

Re: Removing Broken Studs by Welding a Washer and Nut

I've done that too but you have to build up quite a long extension sometime to get enough to grab if the stud is broken off deep in the hole. Easier for me to weld on a nut. But to each his own.

Re: Removing Broken Studs by Welding a Washer and Nut

Sounds good but what if the nut breaks off and you have to re-weld with the wax melted down in there?

Re: running hot

Maybe things aren't as bad as they seem. 170 degrees is a good temp but that 210 on the hills is kind of high since the boiling point is at 212 or there abouts unless at higher altitude. However, did...

Re: Removing Broken Studs by Welding a Washer and Nut

I do the same thing except I use an ordinary stick welder. If the stud is broken off deep below the deck it has to be built up to have metal to weld the washer to. Sometimes I don't even use a washer...

Re: Autolite 3077

TT15 is a lot hotter (the same as Champion W89D which is hotter than a W-20)

Also, unless "touring" by your definition means driving slow all the time there may not be a need for a hotter plug.

Re: Engine Rebuild: Leveling/Boring/Seats/Crank

Use of a torque plate was not unheard of back in the day. According to commentary by Murray Fahnestock, Ford tech engineer and writer for Ford Dealer and Service Field in the 20's and 30's; he said,...

Re: Engine Rebuild: Leveling/Boring/Seats/Crank

Interesting contrast to the statements made by K.R. Wilson, renown toolmaker for Model A's back in the day.

K.R. Wilson explained that everything is a "jelly fish," and the apparently heavy,...

Were the specs from TRW for street driving at moderate RPM's on standard pump gas?

Re: Tight Piston Clearance, Not Model A

Regardless of the measure points, KB brags on the fact that their pistons can be installed tighter than other "performance" pistons. It's the first sentence in their catalog.

Re: Tight Piston Clearance, Not Model A

Not familiar???

Mr. Bird, I can assure you when it comes to engines you're telling Noah about the flood !

Moreover, the title of this thread is Tight Piston Clearance, NOT MODEL A

Re: Tight Piston Clearance, Not Model A

Yes, I read it and you're exactly right that is not what you said "at all" ... but you most definitely implied that tighter running pistons will give trouble. This you post right after I made...

Re: Tight Piston Clearance, Not Model A

So in your opinion the engineers at KB Performance Pistons don't know what they're doing.

Re: Tight Piston Clearance, Not Model A

KB pistons have recommended their minimum clearance to be .0015 and no more than .002 maximum, for years, on street engines normally aspirated with a 4.100 inch bore or less. My most recent catalog...

Re: model a original head

You must not have much experience.

Anti-seize compound or any substance that lubricates threads will increase the pressure of a torque specification, sometimes drastically. Or in other words,...

Re: dipstick reading vs. actual qts of oil

I would have asked the owner why he thought that was the thing to do.

Not sure how much overfill it would take on a Model A but I do know that if an overfill is enough to allow the crank or...

Re: model a original head

Water pump housings are fairly easy to break, as are distributor housings at the base.

If you want the head to come off much more easily next time, then grease the body of the studs with...

Yes, absolutely, a rod could bend..... Not the thing to do IMO.

The key is a head removal tool and/or patience, soaking down the stud holes with Kroil or PB Blaster and then repeated...
