I just got off the phone with the old guy who works on these cars - he is confident that its something wrong internally - mentioned shift rail, sprage and that there could also be something wrong...

Well..... I was able to gently twist mine (my friend said give it a go as he has a couple back up ones - if you have one with the pin in the right position would like a pic to compare to ensure mine...

Well, dont want to bugger anything up in the transmission so will try it with cable pulled out - when going downhill it should 'engine brake' for me as I understand.

No it does not - going downhill on the freeway I am constantly on the brakes as it wants to run away on me - just like having the clutch in.
