A few folks have used CLR with a scotch-brite pad to remove surface rust without damaging the paint. Wear gloves, do it with good ventilation, and rinse well afterwards.

This is the configuration for the I6, the same basic approach work for the V8. Top from the pump and bottom to the head.

After having a local shop rebuild my starter it still failed a couple of months later. Bought a new unit from Dennis Carpenter and everything has been great.

As Jay indicated, avoid using abrasive materials on the stamped characters. Scotch Brite pads are the best choice.
