If you don't need more than 1 amp you could use an electronic voltage regulator, LM7806. The input voltage is 8 to 35 volts with a constant 6 volt output. They are less than $5. Thats what i used on...

I have the same problem also, and 2nd is noisy. When going up a hill in 2nd gear I keep my hand on the gear shift lever with a little pressure so it wont pop out.

Snyder's catalog lists the diamater of a standard pin at .233 to .236. Over size is .247 to .250. They also make one for the slant windshield fordor at .279
