Re: Time lapse Model A engine build

Is the crankshaft hard enough to serve as an adequate substitute for the OEM roller burnishing?

Re: Time lapse Model A engine build

If you search for "Hagerty" on previous forum posts you'll find a multi-page argument about the bearing clearance choices made by the engine rebuilder they hired to do the babbitt. Tight bearings is...

Re: New engine - intermittent backfiring - stuck valve?

Similar problem posted in 2013 turned out to be poor fuel flow.

Re: Scrap Drives May Have Trashed Cars, But Were the Drives Necessary?

Here's an article about the American Legion program from a Kansas newspaper around Thanksgiving, 1942.

Re: Scrap Drives May Have Trashed Cars, But Were the Drives Necessary?

Turns out there was a multi-state "National Jalopy Campaign" specifically targeting old cars for scrap. It was run by the American Legion. Here's what appears to be a separate ad campaign run by a...

Re: Checklist for startup after 10-month unplanned hiatus

I disconnected the battery to prevent my kids leaving the lights on during one of their occasional make-believe driving games.

Re: Checklist for startup after 10-month unplanned hiatus

Guess it depends what "properly" means. I certainly didn't think at the time that I was putting it up for 10 months or I'd have put stabilizer in the gas at the very least. Temperature swings should...

Re: Checklist for startup after 10-month unplanned hiatus

Not gonna change the fluids right now since I just need to run it briefly and then it'll be back in the garage for valve inspection and a new HC head. But I will check the gas and add some MMO in...

Re: Model A only runs 40 miles

Pretty sure the OP means the engine won't rev up under WOT and is only hitting a 40 mph top speed.

Checklist for startup after 10-month unplanned hiatus

With the pandemic going on and the coupe needing valve work, I haven't started her up since Christmas, and I didn't do anything special upon putting her away except disconnect the battery.

Re: Scrap Drives May Have Trashed Cars, But Were the Drives Necessary?

There was a similar thing with the cooking fat drives. The public perception was that the cooking fat was needed for glycerin to make ammo, but in fact the gov't had no trouble sourcing enough...

Re: Scrap Drives May Have Trashed Cars, But Were the Drives Necessary?

The scrap drives did not significantly increase the amount of scrap collected as compared to pre-war levels. However, they may have increased the amount collected as compared to a counterfactual in...

Re: Ford verse Chevrolet

It makes sense to me that, by 1942, the used-car pricing of both 1930 Fords and 1930 Chevys would be pretty low. But the Model A would have been less expensive to operate/maintain, and thus would...

Re: low & no spark on #3 cyl

I don't have personal experience with this behavior but that's what I've heard. I'm not sure why it is. I couldn't find any images of a cutaway body to show how the wiring is run, but I found the...

Re: low & no spark on #3 cyl

If a short occurs within the distributor body, it often affects cylinder 3. You'll find out when the new one arrives. If that doesn't help, here's a thread from '17 describing something similar with...

Re: 6v Alternator

Re: Tie Rod & Drag Link Cups: Steel v. Teflon v. Bronze

To me it feels like a simple tradeoff. Steel: durable but more friction. Teflon: easier steering but less durable. There isn't a "best" – you just pick whichever balance you prefer.

Re: Seatbelts in a Roadster

It's certainly possible to start with lap belts and add shoulder belts later, although it means you'd end up having bought two sets of belts. I disagree that it's "not a lot of extra effort" to add...
