Re: Flathead smoke

You might try a can of "Sea foam" in the crank. I had some smoking out of my stock '49 after sitting for an entire cold winter. One can cured the smoking. Definitely a temporary fix, but might hold...

Re: 1949 Ford design or production issues

I've had my "bone stock" '49 for 25 years. Drives, handles and stops very well, as long you keep it within it's capabilities. Wouldn't trade it for the world.

Re: '49 8BA Fuel pump line and rubber flex line

For George/Maine - Tried that but no good. I'm stumped here. Even the two ends that came apart won't fit back together. Something with that compression bead that I'm doing wrong. Thanks for...

Question '49 8BA Fuel pump line and rubber flex line

What am I doing wrong here. I have new fuel pump pipe and new fuel pump (rubber) flex hose. The threads match up but when I put the little copper "bead" in they won't even come close. Even...

Question '49 Coil Wires - 8BA

Rookie question here. I just put in replacement distributor and coil (not new). Coil terminals are marked + and -. I made an assumption that + is the "hotwire" from ignition and - goes to the...

Re: Late Model Flathead Blow By

Just a "Kick a dead dog" idea. Get can of Seafoam (any auto parts store, walk-mart, target, etc). Pour half the can in the gas tank and half in the crankcase. Maybe save a few drops and pour down...

Re: City Driving an Overdrive

I wired mine with a toggle switch to run hot wire straight down to solenoid. I "click" the o/d in and out as I please. Acts like a 6 speed tranny and around town I like to use 2nd-O/d.

Re: 50 coupe hard steering

I find if I keep my tire pressure at 35 lbs (15 inch radials) it will steer and park much easier.

MY stock '49 is still 6 volt. Everything, even lights, work well.

Re: compression on flathead

Might try running a can of Seafoam through gas and crankcase. I had some smoking a couple years back and put seafoam in both gas and crank. So far, no more smoke.

Re: ebay

I've had very good luck with eBay. On the rare occasion I got a wrong or bad part I go back and check the description and usually was my bad. And, you can always contact the seller for more info...

Re: 50 master cyl. rebuild kit?

I remember reading a "million" years ago that a rebuild kit for the Ford Econoline van was the same as used in the '49-'51 sedan. I would definitely verify before buying.

Re: Canadian Ford question

I did see one in a Southern California Car Show a few about 10 years back. Was a '54 Vicky with a flathead V8.

Re: Sympathy pains for Old Henry

For 41Ford1 - I am no where in your league as far as working on engines. But a million years ago I had a Chevy 6 that developed a knock that sounded for all the world like a rod or main bearing. ...

Re: 6 volt or 12 volt conversion

I rewired my '49 6 years ago, but left it 6 volt. Everything works perfectly.

Re: Sympathy pains for Old Henry

For 41ford1 - Might be apples and oranges here (Ford vs Chebbie) but back in the 80's I had a '66 Chebbie Nova w/ straight six developed a know. After spending a weekend underneath replacing all...

Re: What the Dwell ?

I agree with Dave. My Dad worked on many engines all his life and never owned a dwell meter or a feeler gauge. Just set the points by "eye balling" and sound of the engine running good or not and...

Re: Best shift for 0-60 time?

I have pretty much the same setup in mine (OD with toggle switch). For around town like to use 2nd with OD. That way I have a little bit of engine compression to slow down for stopping or turning.

Re: Tell me this noise isn't what I'm afraid it is.

Might be apples and oranges here, but 30 some odd years ago I had a similar sound in '66 Chevy straight six. Turned out it was chipped tooth on timing gear. Might be easier fix than a rod.
