Re: Snap Measurements for '29 Phaeton/Roadster

Final question: has anyone ever seen snaps on any Model A open car that were NOT centered top to bottom? Tom’s picture clearly shows them to be lower than center. If lower is better, how much lower?...

Re: Snap Measurements for '29 Phaeton/Roadster

Brent has been very helpful. His experience has always been to center, though he offered to check the archives (once they’re open).

In the meantime I’d love to know if anyone has experience or...

Snap Measurements for '29 Phaeton/Roadster

I'm resurrecting this topic because my research turned up two answers from the forum: One posted originally by Tom Weserberg ca 2011 and one posted by Brent more recently. Both good sources! I've...

Phaeton body rivets?

I exposed the rear quarter of my ‘29 phaeton to repair the post bracket that holds the support for the folded top. (Another thread)

There is a support directly below the door latch area that was...

Re: '29 Phaeton Folded Top Support Posts

Exactly! I guess breaking the tack weld and removing the bracket is no big deal?

Thanks!

'29 Phaeton Folded Top Support Posts

The top support rods that come out of the rear quarter of each side of the body are loose. The passenger side is very loose!

I moved the rear seat and side panel out of the way and discovered...

Re: Generator short?

Thanks for all your replies!

Nkaminar: I had a fuse, but hadn’t installed it (sigh), so I’ve taken your advice and done so!

Patrick L: you mention the headlight connectors. I’ve...

Re: Generator short?

Update:

Rechecked the ignition voltage: 6.3v at terminal (both), coil (both sides), points with and without condenser. All good.

Checked the fuel, just to be sure and it flowed well.

Re: Generator short?

Thanks for the replies!

Connected power to Armature without cutout and loose fanbelt: generator turned quote nicely, so not the generator (note to self: low resistance is fine!)

Turned on...

Generator short?

Driving fine for 30 minutes, then big backfire, loss of power and won’t start. Heavy drain indicated on ammeter (10 amps). Driver side of terminal quite hot. I assume a short somewhere, so...

SOLVED: Distributor won't drop in fully...

Thanks to all!

I realized that I have access to the distributor drive gear behind the valve cover. (told you I was feeling stupid!). 5 min to remove the oil return and valve cover and presto: i...

Re: Distributor won't drop in fully...

Thanks for all the replies!

1. Locator pin in distributor body is also above the head, so not an issue.
2. Lower shaft sticks in upper shaft, so when I lift the distributor, the whole thing...

Distributor won't drop in fully...

I'm already feeling stupid: I rebuild my distributor and went to drop it back in the engine. The lower shaft fits into the slots above and I can see it drop into the slot below when I turn the cam. ...

Remove this bolt?

I have never drilled out a bolt, but this may be the time. Someone long ago decided to replace the correct nut/bolt with this and it will not budge. The metal is too soft for visegrips and too...

Re: How to Restore ‘29 Phaeton Top Irons?

Thanks, Dick.

You are quite correct, when I set up the top, I had no idea that the hooked end of the the #2 bow was supposed to lock - like you, I've seem a number of pictures where it had...

Yes. Definitely! With the part numbers, where do we go to get prints?

This is very helpful - and daunting! What would you say to using a 2+ pound expanding foam? It would definitely provide...

Re: How to Restore ‘29 Phaeton Top Irons?

Promising idea! Any structural support is going to be a function of how well the inserted material conforms to the interior. I keep wondering if there isn't a high density closed cell expanding...

Re: How to Restore ‘29 Phaeton Top Irons?

Thanks for pointing out that hard rubber will hold nails/staples well. There must be an epoxy or similar that can be injected/pressed into the curve that would have both strength and staple holding...

How to Restore ‘29 Phaeton Top Irons?

Hi all,

I need advice for restoring a previously ‘restored’ set of Phaeton top irons. The set seems solid, but I’m wondering what I can’t see (internal rust, dry rot in the wood, etc). I’ve...
