Re: 1961 Ford 390 with Mallory electronic distributor

Does it start after the engine cools down a bit? If so then something in the ignition circuit is getting hot and going open circuit. The coil is a logical suspect. Beyond that it could be the dizzy....

Re: steering box

That might be a tall order. You can have it rebuilt.

https://www.larescorp.com/

Also Rock Auto Parts has them, $269.99 + $500 core charge. They are rebuilt by Lares.

Re: 55 Ford Fairlane 12 volt conversion problems

There is no fuse box. There's a fuse on the back of the headlight switch for the dash lights, turn signals, etc.

Re: 57 engine

Look on the crank flange for an aspirin sized dot. Only 312 cranks had those. The caveat is not ALL 312 cranks had 'em.

Re: Stock 57 Fairlane 500

As long as you don't overcarb it by much it'll work fine. I wouldn't go much over 500 CFM with a stock engine. As for the mufflers how loud do you want it? Glasspacks run from about 12" to 30" or so....

Wink Re: 2 barrel carb

Yup, that was then and this is now. The Feds didn't even require Maroney stickers on new vehicles until sometime in the mid fitties. I'm a retired parts and service guy, OEM and aftermarket. I'm just...

Re: 2 barrel carb

To me it stands to reason that Ford (or any other manufacturer for that matter) would use left over parts from a previous model on new models, even if not faced with a shortage of newer parts as long...

Re: What the bes oil to use in a 312 engine

Diesel oil has a more robust detergent package that may be too harsh for gasoline engines over the long run. I have used it and noted that it turned black very quickly from the deposits it dissolved....

Re: Re-pop Parts

The usual suspects come to mind, Mac's, Concours, Dennis Carpenter, etc. A google for classic Ford parts will bring up quite a few. Most parts stores have access to the more commonly used parts but...

Re: steering column install

According to the '54/'55 Mercury parts manual there should be a bearing and a tapered sleeve at the top of the shaft. No spacer or shim shown at the pedal bracket. Again, this is from a Mercury parts...

Re: whee ID

Looks like '50s passenger car. The bolt pattern is correct for that. For beauty rings try Hub Cap Mike. A google will get you there.

Re: Ford Radio?

1952/53 Ford passenger car. Ford had 3 radio suppliers then. It could be made by Bendix, Motorola or Sylvania.

Re: Was the Y-Block introduced in 1954 designed to replace previous flathead?

Motor mounts and crossmembers are entirely different. Of course it can be done but not without some fairly significant surgery.

Re: 1953/56 power steering

I don't know anything about it, but if the seller is trying to talk you out of buying it you should probably heed them. If they think it's junk why do they catalog it?

Re: How do I adjust the play in my Steering?

First inspect the steering linkage and correct any slop, (ball joints, idler arm, etc). On the driver's end of the drag link you'll see a large screw-in plug secured by a cotter pin. Behind the plug...
