I use the yellow plastic bondo spreaders you pick up at swap meets etc. Place the thin edge between the hubcap and wheel then use a flat screwdriver to pry against the yellow spreader. Have done...

I measured the gap on my 5W and it is measuring approximately 3/4" on the ends near the frame horn cover and closer to 1/2" in the middle. This provides ample room for fitting the frame...
