Re: Car fails to acheave high speed

I will have to look into this accelerator throw thing. I've had this exact problem since the day I bought the car. Changed everything. I can get the 40 on a downgrade . . . sometimes.

Re: timing light

I prefer adjusting the timing using a timing light. I use a separate 12 volt battery for the light. I add a mark on the pully and a wire pointer taped to a c-clamp. Works great.

Re: Starter . . . Rebuild or Rebuilt?

Finished my starter shortly after making the initial post. Replaced just about everything. Coils, brushes, button, and switch. Very pleased with the results.

Re: Zenith Carb Leak Puzzle

I've been battling the dreaded "drip" for a year. 2 different carburetors, first a Tillotson and now a Zenith 2. Three shut-off valves. Shims in the carb, etc. Cold weather is worse than hot. When...

Re: Fuel Line, Shut-Off Valve to Firewall: Why Made Of Hard Steel?

I suspect thermal exspansion was a concern when designing long tubes which will be exposed to varying temps and carrying fuel. Brass and Aluminum would not be my first choice. For a short time I used...

Re: "The Eviscerator". Is this OT? Or Almost OT? Or Right On The Money?

I love it. Can't be any worse than being run over by my Model A. You would die a very very slow and agonizing death, from dripping oil and hot radiator fluid. At least with the Eviscerator you could...

Re: New Cut-Out Relay . . . Not so good.

I had replaced all of the wiring in the car with modern braided copper in the spring. The curcuit the runs from the battery and ends up at the relay was beefed up to the next larger guage. Then the...

Re: New Cut-Out Relay . . . Not so good.

My desire to stay with an original style relay, overwhelmed my sense of safety. The shorted relay completely discharged the fully charged battery without burning it up. Having just worked on the...

New Cut-Out Relay . . . Not so good.

Learned, for the most part, why this import relay (Taiwan) stuck closed. The relay contacts are not parallel or square to each other. In fact, they're not even directly in line with one another. This...

Re: Begging to be a hot rod.

Well, the culprit was not the starter after all. Although this last adventure accentuated the starter as getting ready to fail, it's now in the middle of being rebuilt. The problem was the new...

Starter Field Insulator. . . . location?

In my starter there appears to be just one field coil insulator. Is there a proper location where the insulator should reside? Or is the insulator properly installed as depicted in the picture?

Starter windings . . . a Look-See

I don't know what I was expecting to see, but here's a look at the windings from a rebuild I'm attempting.

Coating the armature . . .

Any thoughts on what product would be suitable to coat the amature of a starter and/or generator (excluding the commutator of course). Polyurethane? Shellac?

Re: Starter . . . Rebuild or Rebuilt?

I learned my lesson with those screws. If you hit the impact screwdriver too hard the downward thrust defeats the spin. Spent about an hour learning that. Now I can beat the tar out out anything and...

Re: Starter . . . Rebuild or Rebuilt?

Thanks. It took an impact screwdriver to loosen the coil screws. Never had the need for one till now. What a bear. Was ready to drill them out when they started to turn. Will try replacing coils,...

Re: Begging to be a hot rod.

Sounds like a idea. Thowing good money after bad can become an addiction. I sense that 99.9 percent of the forum members agree. ;-) Did you have to cut out firewall to make her fit?

Re: Begging to be a hot rod.

The actual cause of the original post was never resolved. Replaced the new distributor cable with another. Drove it maybe three times and then the starter craps out. The crank hole is not aligned...

Re: Begging to be a hot rod.

The starter wouldn't start when it was in the car. Took it out and fired up on the ground and it works fine. Dismantled the contact and this is what I got. A lot of missing copper.

PS. Then it...

Re: Begging to be a hot rod.

This last spring I wired the entire car with new wiring and in that process I thought about adding a big fuse block for all the different circuits in the car. But ultimately I removed the block...

Re: Begging to be a hot rod.

Well I can say for certain is that the starter no workee. It must have drained the battery while I was at work. The starter is the only component in the car I haven't been able to examine thoroughly,...
